Best AI Quiz Generator from PDF, Documents and Notes

We compared nine AI quiz generators on the thing that actually matters if you already have the material: can it read your document, and what can you do with the questions afterward. Prices below were read from each vendor's own pricing page in July 2026.

The short answer

There is no single best AI quiz generator, because these tools split into two different products that get reviewed as if they were one. If you already have the source material and you want questions out of it, the tools that publicly document document upload are PDFQuiz, Quizgecko, Wayground (formerly Quizizz) and Kahoot. If you want students playing a live game on their phones, Kahoot and Wayground are delivery platforms that happen to include a generator. Pick based on which half of that you actually need.

One detail decides more of these evaluations than pricing does: how much of your file the tool reads. Wayground's own help documentation states it processes only the first 16,000 characters of an uploaded file, one file at a time. A 40 page chapter will not fit inside that.

AI quiz generator comparison

Every price below was read from the vendor's own published pricing page in July 2026. Where a vendor does not publish a price you can read without an account, this table says so instead of guessing.

Tool Really built for Upload your own document? Published price (July 2026)
PDFQuiz Turning a document you already have into a quiz or test Yes. PDF, Word and PowerPoint Free plan. Plus $7/mo billed $84/yr ($14 monthly). Pro $19/mo billed $228/yr ($39 monthly)
Quizgecko Student self study courses, heavy nursing and medical focus Yes. Marketing says "any file", no extension list published Free. Plus $16/mo. Ultra $29/mo (LMS export is Ultra only)
Wayground (formerly Quizizz) Gamified K-12 classroom delivery Yes. PDF, PPTX, DOC, DOCX, PNG, JPG. One file at a time, first 16,000 characters only Basic $0. Individual $18/mo billed annually at $216
Kahoot Live classroom game show PDF confirmed. AI file generation starts at Silver, Bronze is limited to a 1 page file Free. Bronze $3/mo ($36/yr). Silver $7/mo ($84/yr). Gold $12/mo ($144/yr). Kahoot! One $19/mo ($228/yr)
QuestionWell Cheap teacher side question writing that feeds other platforms Not listed. Features page names paste a reading, YouTube and a web link Free. Premium $5.83/mo ($70 billed annually)
MagicSchool AI District wide AI toolkit, quiz making is 1 of 80+ tools Not documented on their site Free. Plus $8.33/user/mo billed annually ($12.99 monthly)
Conker K-12 standards aligned quizzes (NGSS, TEKS) Not documented on their site Not published in readable form. The pricing table loads client side and shows no price
Quizlet Flashcard and memorization study platform Not documented in their public help center Not published publicly. Plan names only, prices sit behind a gated upgrade page
PrepAI Question paper generation for institutions Not verifiable, site is gated Not readable. Pricing is split by region (us, uk, eu, in) so any single figure is region specific

Vendors change pricing often. Check the vendor's page before you buy, and treat any listicle quoting a price without a date as stale.

How to choose an AI quiz generator

1. Start from what you already have

If the material exists as a chapter, a deck or a set of notes, the generator has to read files. That sounds obvious, but half the tools marketed as AI quiz generators actually generate from a topic prompt, and a topic prompt writes generic questions about the subject rather than questions about your syllabus. Check the vendor's own documentation for an accepted file type list, not their homepage headline.

2. Check the character limit before the price

A cheap tool that reads 16,000 characters of a 60,000 character chapter will quietly quiz the first third of it and skip the rest. That is worse than useless for exam prep, because the gaps are invisible. Ask how much of a long document gets read, and whether you can upload more than one file into the same quiz.

3. Decide whether you need a file or a screen

Classroom platforms are built to deliver a quiz live and record scores. If what you need is a printable test with a separate answer key, or a set you can hand to a study group, you want export. PDFQuiz outputs a PDF, a Word quiz, a Word answer key, a tab separated file for flashcard import, and a shareable online quiz link.

4. Be careful with LMS import claims

Canvas imports questions natively only as QTI packages. Blackboard bulk upload takes tab delimited text. Moodle takes GIFT, Moodle XML and Aiken but not CSV. No single question file is accepted natively by all three, so a tool claiming to work with "any LMS" is worth testing before you commit a semester to it. Our Canvas quiz generator and Moodle quiz generator pages document what each platform actually accepts.

Classroom game platforms are a different purchase

Kahoot, Blooket, Gimkit and Socrative come up constantly in this search, and they belong in a separate column. They are delivery tools. Their paid tiers buy player capacity, rooms and reporting rather than better question writing, so compare them against each other rather than against a generator.

Platform Published price, July 2026 How questions get in
KahootFree. Bronze $36/yr, Silver $84/yr, Gold $144/yrManual entry, AI generation gated by tier (one page file on Bronze)
BlooketFree. Plus $59.88/yr, Plus Flex $9.99/moManual entry, fixed column spreadsheet template, or copy a Quizlet set
GimkitFree. Pro $59.88/yr. Department $650/yr, school $1,000/yrManual entry, Quizlet import, CSV import, gallery, KitCollab
SocrativeFree. Essentials $120/yr, Pro $200.04/yr (2 seats)Manual entry, quiz import from Excel, tiered access to Socrative AI

Every route in that last column assumes the questions already exist. That is why teachers commonly pair one of these with a generator: full breakdowns in our Blooket alternative, Gimkit alternative, Socrative alternative and Kahoot alternative pages.

Which tool fits which job

Teachers building assessments

You have the reading, the slides and the standards. You need questions that match this week's material and a printable answer key. Document upload plus export matters more than gamification. See the quiz maker for teachers.

Students revising for exams

You are working from a textbook chapter or lecture notes and you want retrieval practice rather than rereading. Whole document coverage is the deciding feature. See textbook to quiz.

Corporate training teams

Your source is a policy document, an SOP or a training manual, and the knowledge check has to trace back to it. Accuracy against the source document outranks everything else. See employee training quiz maker.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best AI quiz generator?

It depends on whether you are generating questions from your own material or delivering a game in class. For turning an uploaded PDF, Word file or slide deck into a quiz you can print or export, PDFQuiz, Quizgecko and Wayground are the three that publicly document document upload. For live classroom play, Kahoot and Wayground are delivery platforms first and generators second.

Can AI generate quiz questions from a PDF?

Yes. Modern AI quiz generators read the text of an uploaded PDF and write multiple choice, true or false and short answer questions from it in seconds. Accuracy depends on the document being text based rather than a low quality scan, and on the tool reading the whole file instead of only the first few thousand characters.

Is there a free AI quiz generator?

Most tools in this comparison publish a free tier, but the free tiers are capped. Wayground limits free accounts to 20 stored assessments with a 14 day expiry. QuestionWell caps free users at 5 to 10 questions at a time. Kahoot restricts AI file generation to paid tiers starting at Silver. Read the cap, not the word free.

What happened to Quizizz?

Quizizz was rebranded as Wayground. As of July 2026, quizizz.com/pricing redirects to wayground.com/pricing and the product is presented as Wayground, formerly Quizizz. Existing accounts and content carried over. Most comparison articles still list it under the old name, which is a good staleness test when you are reading reviews.

How much does an AI quiz generator cost?

Published prices in July 2026 range from about $5.83 per month for QuestionWell Premium billed annually to $29 per month for Quizgecko Ultra. Wayground Individual is $18 per month billed annually at $216. Several vendors, including Conker and Quizlet, do not publish a price you can read without an account.

Which AI quiz generator lets you export to Word or PDF?

PDFQuiz exports a quiz as a PDF, as a Word document, as a separate Word answer key, and as a tab separated file for flashcard import. Quizgecko documents PDF and Word download for printing. Most of the classroom platforms here are built around on screen delivery rather than a printable file, so check before assuming you can hand out a paper test.

Test it on your own document

The only comparison that settles this is your material. Upload the chapter or deck you actually need questions from and see what comes back.
