Blackboard's question upload format, row by row

Most failed uploads come down to a formatting detail, not a bad question. Each row starts with a question type code, then the question text, then the answers, all separated by a literal TAB character. These are the types documented for the Ultra Course View.

Three rules catch people out. The words that mark answers (correct, incorrect, true, false) must be in English or the row fails. Images cannot ride along in the text upload. And a blank line between records is not ignored, it is processed and returns an error. Uploaded questions default to zero points unless you set a default first, so check your scoring after the import.

PDFQuiz gives you the questions and answer key as a Word document, a PDF, or a tab-separated text file you can open directly in Excel. Arranging them into Blackboard's column order is then a spreadsheet job, and Anthology confirms the upload file can be edited in Excel as long as you save it as Text (Tab delimited) rather than .xlsx or .csv. If your campus is still on the Original Course View

Worth planning around: Anthology has stated that the Original Course View will be sunset on December 31, 2026, and that all institutions must move to the Ultra Course View at that time. If you are rebuilding courses in Ultra anyway, it is a good moment to regenerate question banks from your source documents rather than hand-migrating tests you wrote years ago.

A few differences matter while both views are in play. Original documents a longer list of question type codes than Ultra, including ordering, file response, and jumbled sentence. Original's help gives 500 records as the batch guidance where Ultra gives 250. And the QTI menus sit in different places: in Ultra you use Manage banks in the Details and Actions panel, while in Original you go through Course Tools, then Tests, Surveys, and Pools, then Import QTI 2.1 Package.
