Unit 3. Road to Revolution, 1763 to 1776
After the French and Indian War, Britain carried a large war debt and kept about 10,000 soldiers in North America. Parliament looked to the colonies to share the cost.
The Stamp Act of 1765 taxed printed paper, from newspapers to legal documents and playing cards. Colonists objected that they had no representatives in Parliament, and the Stamp Act Congress met in New York that October.
Parliament repealed the Stamp Act in 1766 but passed the Declaratory Act the same day, asserting its authority over the colonies in all cases whatsoever.
Pages 2 to 6 continue with the Townshend Acts, the Boston Massacre and the Tea Act.
