PDF to Kahoot: Convert a PDF into Kahoot Quiz Questions

Kahoot imports questions from a spreadsheet, never from a PDF. Upload your chapter or handout here, get multiple choice questions with an answer key, and drop them into the Kahoot template in a few minutes instead of typing twenty items by hand.

Your file is processed securely and deleted automatically after the questions are built.

The short answer

You cannot upload a PDF to Kahoot. Kahoot's only bulk input is an .xlsx spreadsheet template with columns for the question, up to four answers, a time limit in seconds, and the number of the correct answer. So converting a PDF to a Kahoot is two steps: generate multiple choice questions from the document, then paste them into that template and import it from Add question, Import inside the Kahoot creator. Keep questions to 95 characters and answers to 60, because those are the import limits.

The Kahoot spreadsheet import template, column by column

Most failed imports come from one of two things: a question that runs past the character cap, or a blank correct-answer cell. Here is exactly what each column expects, checked against Kahoot's own help documentation in July 2026.

Column What goes in it Limit or rule Required?
Question The question stem 95 characters including spaces Yes
Answer 1 and Answer 2 The first two options 60 characters each, including spaces Yes, two minimum
Answer 3 and Answer 4 Two more distractors 60 characters each, four options maximum Optional
Time limit (seconds) Seconds players get to answer 5 seconds to 4 minutes, template default 20 Yes
Correct answer(s) The option number that is right A number, or numbers with commas such as 2,3 Yes, at least one
File format The saved template itself .xlsx, editable in Excel, Sheets, Numbers, LibreOffice Yes

One quirk worth knowing: Kahoot's help center flags that the creation page allows a 120-character question while the spreadsheet template is set at 95. If you write to 95 you are safe either way. That cap is stricter than most people expect, and it is the single most useful thing to know before you generate questions you intend to import.

Why there is no direct PDF to Kahoot button

Kahoot is built for the live moment: the music, the leaderboard, the room shouting at the projector. What it is not built for is authoring twenty questions from a chapter at nine on a Sunday night. Its bulk input is a spreadsheet, and a spreadsheet still needs someone to write the questions. That is the gap people hit when they search for a PDF to Kahoot converter.

The split is clean. This tool reads your document and writes the items: it picks the testable points, phrases each one as a question, and builds three wrong answers that are plausible enough to be worth choosing. Kahoot runs the game. You are not replacing Kahoot, you are skipping the blank template.

The one thing to plan for is length. Kahoot is a projector format, so its 95-character question cap is deliberate: a question has to be readable from the back of a room in a few seconds. Generated questions are often longer than that, especially the ones with a scenario in the stem. Trim them, and while you trim, cut the clause that made the question long rather than shortening the words. A tighter stem is usually a better question anyway. The same source document also works with our core PDF to quiz converter if you want a printable version with a full answer key.

How to turn a PDF into a Kahoot in five steps

1

Upload the PDF

One chapter or handout at a time gives sharper questions than a whole textbook.

2

Generate multiple choice

Ask for four options per question, since that matches the four colored buttons players tap.

3

Trim to the caps

Cut each stem to 95 characters and each option to 60. Shorter reads better on a projector.

4

Fill the template

Paste into Kahoot's .xlsx template, set a time limit, and put the correct option number in the last column.

5

Import and play

In the creator, Add question, Import, drop the file, Import, Continue. Edit anything, then host the game.

How long should each Kahoot question run?

The time limit column is the difference between a game that drags and one that keeps a room awake. Kahoot allows 5 seconds to 4 minutes. These are sensible defaults by question type, based on how long it takes to read the stem plus think.

Question type Suggested time limit Why
Two-option true or false check 10 seconds Recognition is fast, and a long clock invites second-guessing
Definition or vocabulary recall 20 seconds The template default, enough to read four short options
Concept question with longer options 30 seconds Four full-sentence options take real time to read from a screen
Calculation or multi-step reasoning 60 to 90 seconds Players need working time, not just reading time
Scenario with a paragraph to read Up to 4 minutes The ceiling Kahoot allows, but consider a written quiz instead

If most of your questions need 60 seconds or more, the material probably wants a written assessment rather than a live game. In that case generate a printable version with our PDF exam generator or build a reusable question bank and pull the fastest items out for the Kahoot.

Who turns documents into Kahoot games

Middle and high school teachers

Friday review games built from the week's reading. Generate twenty items from the chapter, trim them, and the review runs itself while you watch which questions the room gets wrong.

Corporate trainers

A live knowledge check at the end of a compliance or product session beats a silent room. Build it from the same deck or policy PDF the session was based on.

Tutors and study groups

Turn a study guide into a game your group plays before an exam. Retrieval under a little pressure sticks better than another read-through of the notes.

PDF to Kahoot questions people ask

Can you convert a PDF to a Kahoot?

Not directly, because Kahoot cannot read a PDF. Kahoot imports questions from an .xlsx spreadsheet template only. So the working route is to generate multiple choice questions from your PDF first, trim them to Kahoot's length limits, paste them into the template, and import. The generation step is what saves the hour.

How do I import questions into Kahoot from a spreadsheet?

Download Kahoot's own quiz template, fill in the question, up to four answers, a time limit in seconds, and the number of the correct answer, then save it as .xlsx. In the Kahoot creator, click Add question in the left panel, choose Import, drop in your file, click Import and then Continue. The questions appear in the creator ready to edit.

What is the character limit for a Kahoot question?

The spreadsheet import template caps a question at 95 characters including spaces and each answer at 60 characters including spaces. Kahoot's own help center notes that the question limit on the creation page is higher, at 120 characters, so write to 95 if you plan to import rather than type questions in by hand.

How many answer options can a Kahoot question have?

Up to four, and at least two are required. Every row must also have at least one correct answer, marked by putting the option number in the correct answer column. If more than one option is right, list the numbers separated by commas, such as 2,3.

How long should the time limit be on each Kahoot question?

Kahoot allows anywhere from 5 seconds to 4 minutes per question, and the template defaults to 20 seconds. Twenty seconds suits a short recall question. Give 30 seconds when the question has a long stem or requires a calculation, and drop to 10 for quick true or false style checks to keep the pace up.

Can I import every Kahoot question type from a spreadsheet?

No. The spreadsheet import handles standard quiz questions only. Formats such as true or false slides, polls, puzzles, word clouds, and open-ended questions have to be added inside the Kahoot creator after the import. Generate multiple choice items for the import and add the extras afterwards.

Is there a way to skip Kahoot entirely and just run the quiz?

Yes, if you do not need the live game format. You can share the generated quiz as an online link that scores itself, print it with an answer key, or deliver it through your LMS. Our Kahoot alternative comparison covers honestly where each approach fits, including where Kahoot wins.
