Gimkit alternative
Gimkit Alternative: AI Quiz Maker That Builds Question Sets from Your PDF
Gimkit turns a kit into a game. Building the kit is still on you: type it, import a CSV, pull a Quizlet set, or crowdsource it from students. Upload the chapter or deck you are actually teaching and get the questions drafted for you, ready to print, assign, or move into a game.

The short answer
Gimkit is a game engine with a kit editor attached. Kits are made from scratch, imported from Quizlet, imported as a CSV, or borrowed from the gallery, and KitCollab lets students propose questions you then approve. Every one of those paths assumes the questions exist already. PDFQuiz produces them from the material itself, so the input is your chapter, not a blank row.
If you want the game modes, keep Gimkit and stop hand building kits: generate the set here, review it, and carry it across. If what you owe on Friday is a graded quiz or a printed test with an answer key, this is the whole tool and you never need the game.

Every way to fill a Gimkit kit, and what each one costs you
| Route | What it needs from you | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| Type it from scratch | Every stem and every option, by hand | The hour you were trying to avoid |
| Import a Quizlet set | A set that already exists on Quizlet | Term and definition pairs, not real question stems |
| Import a CSV | Questions already sitting in rows and columns | Something still had to write them |
| Kit gallery | Nothing, you pick one | Built for someone else's chapter and reading level |
| KitCollab | Class time plus a review pass | You approve every submission, quality varies |
| Generate from your source (PDFQuiz) | The file you already teach from | Review the distractors before you use it |
The gallery is the one worth thinking hardest about. A borrowed kit looks free and quietly costs alignment: it covers a different edition, a different reading level, and skips the three terms your unit test actually assesses.
PDFQuiz vs Gimkit
| Feature | PDFQuiz | Gimkit |
|---|---|---|
| Built primarily for | Writing questions from your material | Game modes built around a kit you supply |
| Generate from an uploaded file | Yes, PDF, Word, PowerPoint, images, on every plan | Scratch, Quizlet import, CSV import, gallery, KitCollab |
| Printable test and answer key | PDF, Word quiz, separate Word answer key | Not the product model |
| Student engagement in the room | A quiz link, no game layer | This is the whole point of the product |
| Published price | Free plan. Plus $7/mo billed $84/yr. Pro $19/mo billed $228/yr | Pro $14.99/mo or $59.88/yr. Department up to 20 teachers $650/yr. School $1,000/yr |
| What the paid tier buys | Volume of material processed | Game modes, assignments and reporting |
Where Gimkit wins: the modes. Nothing here reproduces students arguing over a Trust No One round, and if classroom energy is the outcome you are buying, that is a fair purchase. See the wider field in our best AI quiz generator comparison.
Why teachers search for a Gimkit alternative
Usually one of two things happened. Either the department did the math on a school license and wanted to know what else that budget could buy, or a teacher realized that the fun part takes ten minutes and the kit takes ninety.
KitCollab is a genuinely clever answer to the second problem, and it has a real limit. Student written questions arrive at student depth. You get recall, you rarely get the application item that separates the class, and you still read every submission before approving it. It moves the work rather than removing it.
Generating from source removes it. The chapter goes in, the questions come out at the depth you asked for, and what you spend is a review pass rather than a writing session. Start with PDF to quiz for a reading, PowerPoint to quiz for a deck, or textbook to quiz when the unit is a chapter with numbered sections.
On budget, compare honestly rather than on sticker price. Gimkit Pro at $59.88 a year is not expensive for what it does, and a department license at $650 a year is a real line item. Whether either is worth it depends on how much of your week the kit building is eating, which is exactly the part that upload based generation gives back.
From source file to finished set
Upload the unit material
A chapter, a packet, a lecture deck, a lab sheet. Scanned pages work, so an older photocopied reading is still usable input.
Set the count and format
Four option multiple choice travels cleanly into a game platform. Short answer and open ended are better when the set is going to be graded on paper.
Review once, use it twice
Fix anything that reads oddly, then assign the quiz by link, export a printable test with a separate key, or move the questions into your game platform.
Where it earns its keep
Unit review week
Three chapters in, one set out, aligned to the actual test rather than to a gallery kit built for a different edition.
Department wide consistency
Every section generates from the same shared reading, so the same content gets assessed at the same depth across teachers.
Retakes and makeups
A second set from the same chapter takes minutes, which matters when half the class has already discussed version one.
Days with no devices
Print the quiz and the answer key separately. No logins, no charging carts, no platform to explain to a substitute.
Building next year's bank
Save each unit's output and the work compounds. The question bank generator is designed around that.
Keeping game day
Generate here, play there. The students get the mode they like and you get your Sunday evening back.
Questions teachers ask before switching
How much does Gimkit Pro cost?
Gimkit Pro is published at $14.99 per month, or $59.88 per year which works out to $4.99 a month on the annual plan. Group licensing is separate: a department license covering up to 20 teachers is listed at $650 per year, and a whole school license at $1,000 per year. Confirm current numbers with the vendor before purchasing.
Can Gimkit generate questions from a PDF?
A kit is built from scratch, imported from a Quizlet set, imported as a CSV, or picked from the gallery, and students can contribute through KitCollab. Each of those routes assumes the questions already exist somewhere. Reading a chapter PDF and drafting the questions from it is the step PDFQuiz handles.
What is KitCollab in Gimkit?
KitCollab lets students submit questions for a kit through a shared link or code, in class or on their own time. You review each submission and approve what makes it in. It is a nice participation activity. As a question sourcing strategy it produces mostly recall level items and still costs you a review pass.
Is there a cheaper Gimkit alternative for a whole department?
Compare on what you consume rather than on headline price. Gimkit charges per teacher and per school for game access. PDFQuiz charges by how much material you process, and the free plan generates real quizzes, so a department can run a live unit through it before anyone raises a purchase order.
Can I move generated questions into Gimkit?
Yes, through the CSV route. Generate a four option multiple choice set here, review it, then lay the questions and options into the columns Gimkit's import expects. Keep the option order stable after import, since the correct answer is usually tied to position rather than to text.
Do students need accounts to take a quiz here?
No. Quizzes are shared as a link and students answer without registering, which keeps the roster paperwork out of it. If you would rather stay on paper, export the PDF version and hand out the printed test with the key kept as a separate file.
