Kahoot is a live event: one pass, a shared timer, a leaderboard, and no memory of last week. That makes it excellent for a whole-class check and close to useless as a study system.
So the real question for a teacher is not which to buy. It is how to fill both without typing everything twice. Quizlet needs term and definition pairs. Kahoot needs short multiple choice questions with plausible wrong answers. Both come out of the same source material, and generating them from the chapter you are teaching takes about a minute instead of an evening.

Read the Kahoot ladder carefully before you upgrade. If your class is 28 students, the free tier already covers you and Gold buys you nothing you need. The tiers exist for lecture halls, assemblies and district events. Quizlet's paid tier is a personal purchase most students make themselves, which is worth knowing before you build a lesson that assumes everyone has it. Why studying and playing are not the same thing
The research on this is unusually clear. Pulling an answer out of memory strengthens it far more than reading the same material again, and the effect gets bigger when the attempts are spread across days rather than crammed into one session. Roediger and Karpicke's 2006 work is the standard citation, and every flashcard tool built since is a version of that finding.
Quizlet is that shape. You see a term, you try to produce the definition, you find out whether you were right, and the ones you miss come back around. Do that four evenings in a row and the material is genuinely learned. That is why students who study with cards outperform students who reread notes, even when the rereaders spend more total minutes.
Kahoot is a different instrument. One question appears, a timer runs, points get awarded partly for speed, and it moves on. Nobody revisits the item they missed. What Kahoot gives you is a fast, honest read on what the room actually knows right now, delivered in a format students enjoy enough to pay attention to. That is genuinely valuable, it is just not studying.
The practical takeaway for a teacher: use Kahoot to find the gap, then hand students something that closes it. Cards for the terminology, practice questions for the reasoning.
