The short answer
Pick Kahoot when the class plays together, live, on a projector, and the point is energy and a quick pulse check. Pick Quizizz, now branded Wayground, when students work at their own pace on homework or practice and you want the data afterward. On price the two are no longer comparable in the same way: Kahoot still publishes per-teacher tiers from $3 to $19 a month, while Wayground has moved its paid tiers to quote-based school and district plans and keeps a free Basic account for individual teachers.
The part neither platform solves is the one that actually eats your evening. Both hand you a blank question form. Whichever you choose, the questions still have to come from somewhere, and typing forty of them from a chapter is the work. Generate them from the source material first, review them, then push the finished set into Kahoot or Wayground. The platform choice stops being expensive once the authoring is done.

What Kahoot and Quizizz cost in 2026
This is the part that has changed most. Kahoot still sells to individual teachers with a public price list. Wayground has pushed its paid product toward schools and districts, so an individual teacher is choosing between a free Basic account and asking an administrator to buy a site plan.

Two practical notes. Kahoot's participant number is the ceiling for a single live game, so a lecture hall or an all-grade assembly is what pushes teachers up the tiers, not features. And Wayground runs a free-for-schools program for Title I campuses and schools above a free and reduced lunch threshold, which is worth checking before anyone requests a quote. Prices change, so confirm the current figures on each vendor's own pricing page before you budget against them.
Which one should you actually pick
Choose by the moment in your lesson, not by the feature grid. Kahoot is a whole-class event. It runs for eight minutes, the room gets loud, and you find out fast whether Friday's concept landed. It is very good at that and fairly poor at everything else, because the shared timer means the slowest reader in the room sets the experience for the fastest one.
Wayground is the opposite shape. Students read the question on their own device, take the time they need, and you get a report showing which items the class as a whole missed. That makes it the better tool for homework, for review before a test, and for anything with a stem longer than about fifteen words. It is a weaker party.
Where Blooket usually comes up in this search: it is a third option that layers arcade-style games over a question set, and students often like it more than either. It has the same limitation as the other two, though. Someone still writes the questions. Most teachers who use both settle into a pattern rather than picking a winner. Live game on Friday for review, self-paced set assigned over the weekend, same underlying questions in both. That only works cheaply if the questions exist as a plain set you own, rather than being locked into whichever creator you first typed them into.

The chapter PDF, the slide deck, the handout, your lecture notes. The questions come out using the vocabulary your students actually saw, which is the difference between your set and a library one.
Match the format to the platform
Short multiple choice stems if it is going into a live Kahoot, because they have to be readable on a projector under a timer. Longer stems are fine for a self-paced Wayground set.
Review, then move it in

Friday review before a unit test

Why did Quizizz change its name to Wayground?
Quizizz rebranded to Wayground in 2025 as the product widened from a quiz game into an instruction platform covering lessons, practice and reporting. Old links redirect and the AI features are still branded Quizizz AI in places. Teachers keep searching the old name, so most comparisons list both.
Can Kahoot or Quizizz make questions from a PDF?
Not on the free tiers. Kahoot puts creation from existing files on its higher paid plans, and Wayground's AI sits inside its plan structure. Generating the set from your own chapter first and importing it works on any tier of either platform, which is why a lot of teachers do the authoring outside and treat both tools purely as delivery.
Can I use the same questions in both Kahoot and Quizizz?
Yes, if you keep them as plain text rather than only inside one creator. Kahoot imports from a spreadsheet template and Wayground accepts pasted plain-text questions. The friction is length: Kahoot caps question and answer text tightly for the projector, so a set written for self-paced use often needs trimming before it plays live.
