PL-900 is Microsoft Power Platform Fundamentals, it costs $99 in the United States (confirmed in Microsoft's pricing feed), and you need 700 out of 1000 to pass. It was NOT retired in the wave that killed MS-900. Instead it got rewritten: on July 24, 2026 the entire Power Pages domain disappears and a new domain, agents in Microsoft Copilot Studio, arrives at 20 to 25 percent of the exam. The current outline has five domains: business value (5 to 10 percent), managing the Power Platform environment (20 to 25 percent), Power Apps (20 to 25 percent), Power Automate (20 to 25 percent), and Copilot Studio agents (20 to 25 percent). Power BI appears zero times. If your prep material predates July 2026, it teaches a deleted domain and misses a fifth of the paper.

The July 24, 2026 rewrite: Power Pages out, Copilot Studio agents in

Microsoft's own change log on the PL-900 study guide compares the outline before and after July 24, 2026, and the changes are structural, not cosmetic. Here is what the change log actually says, row by row.

Skill area before July 24, 2026 As of July 24, 2026 Change
Demonstrate the capabilities of Power PagesGoneEntire domain removed
Build a canvas appGoneRemoved
Build a model-driven appGoneRemoved
Did not existDescribe features and capabilities of agents in Microsoft Copilot StudioNew domain, 20 to 25%
Describe the business value of Microsoft Power PlatformSame namePercent of exam decreased
Manage the Microsoft Power Platform environmentSame namePercent of exam increased
Demonstrate the capabilities of Power AutomateSame namePercent of exam increased

Notice the pattern in the removed rows: every objective that started with the word build is gone. The refreshed PL-900 asks you to describe how to build basic apps and flows instead of building them. Meanwhile the word agent appears 14 times in the refreshed outline and Copilot Studio gets its own domain. The low-code fundamentals exam has been re-centered on the agent era, same as the rest of Microsoft's catalog.

The practical consequence: any question bank, video course or handout produced before mid-2026 drills you on Power Pages content that can no longer appear and says nothing about a domain now worth up to a quarter of the paper. The fix is to build questions from current material: generate practice questions from your own Power Platform notes and weight them to the five real domains.

PL-900 skills measured, straight from Microsoft's study guide

Five domains as of July 24, 2026. Four of them carry equal weight, so there is no domain you can safely skip except arguably the small business-value opener.

Domain What is actually in it Weight
Describe the business value of Microsoft Power PlatformThe value of Power Apps, Power Automate and Copilot Studio working together, connectors, and how the platform ties into Microsoft 365, Dynamics 365 and Azure.5 to 10%
Manage the Microsoft Power Platform environmentMicrosoft Dataverse: tables, columns, relationships and business rules. Then administration and governance: environments, security roles, data loss prevention policies and the admin centers.20 to 25%
Demonstrate the capabilities of Power AppsCanvas apps versus model-driven apps and when each fits, use cases, and describing how basic apps are built and shared. The hands-on build objectives were removed in the July 2026 refresh.20 to 25%
Demonstrate the capabilities of Power AutomateFlow types, triggers and actions, connectors, and describing how basic cloud flows are built and managed. This domain's share of the exam increased in the refresh.20 to 25%
Describe features and capabilities of agents in Microsoft Copilot StudioThe new domain. What agents are, how to build them in Copilot Studio with topics, knowledge and actions, and how to manage, publish and monitor them. Brand new as of July 24, 2026, so most third-party prep does not cover it yet.20 to 25%

Two absences are worth naming because people assume the opposite. Power BI appears zero times in this outline; the Power BI exam is PL-300, a separate associate-level certification. And AI Builder appears zero times; the AI content on PL-900 is Copilot Studio agents, not AI Builder models.

Weights and bullets are current as of the study-guide version stamped July 24, 2026. Microsoft publishes no question count for PL-900 and no pass rate for any exam. Its general guidance is that most exams contain 40 to 60 questions. The passing score is 700 on a scale of 1 to 1000, and Microsoft notes a scaled score may not equal 70 percent of the points.

PL-900 or AZ-900 or AB-900: pick by the stack you touch

After the MS-900 retirement, Microsoft's fundamentals tier looks different than most guides describe. Here is how the surviving $99-tier exams split the territory, with one honest count that separates them.

The describe-count row is the honest tell. PL-900 stayed a genuine fundamentals exam through its refresh: recognition, use cases, and when-would-you-use-this questions. AB-900, the exam that stands where MS-900 stood, dropped the word describe entirely and reads like an administration exam. If you want the gentlest possible Microsoft entry point and you work anywhere near business apps, PL-900 is now arguably it.

How to build PL-900 practice questions that match the current blueprint

The refresh punished stale prep harder than any recent fundamentals update. Build from current material and drill the new domain first.

1
Upload current material
The PL-900 study guide, Microsoft Learn Power Platform modules, or your own notes. If your material has a Power Pages chapter and no Copilot Studio chapter, it predates the refresh.
2
Drill Copilot Studio agents first
The one domain almost no third-party bank covers yet, worth up to a quarter of the paper. Topics, knowledge sources, actions, publishing channels and monitoring.
3
Know Dataverse and governance
The environment domain grew in the refresh. Tables versus columns, security roles, environments and DLP policies are reliable question territory for business users who have never opened an admin center.
4
Learn the boundaries
Canvas versus model-driven apps, flow types, and which product fits which scenario. Describe-level exams live on when-would-you-use-this questions, and PL-900 asks them relentlessly.

Should you take PL-900?

With MS-900 gone, PL-900 competes with AZ-900 for the title of most approachable Microsoft cert. The honest read by situation:

Your situation What to do
You build flows or apps at work alreadyTake it soon. You know most of the material by osmosis; your gaps are governance vocabulary (environments, DLP, security roles) and the new agents domain. A weekend of targeted drilling covers both.
You were planning MS-900MS-900 retired on March 31, 2026. PL-900 is one of two sensible substitutes; the other is AB-900. Pick PL-900 if your interest is business apps and automation, AB-900 if it is Microsoft 365 administration and Copilot rollout.
You want the Power BI examThat is PL-300, not PL-900. Power BI appears zero times on this outline. PL-900 is not a prerequisite for PL-300, so you can go straight there.
You sit the exam before July 24, 2026You get the old outline: Power Pages is still on it, the build objectives are still on it, and there is no Copilot Studio agents domain. From July 24 onward, the new outline on this page applies. Check your exam date against that line before choosing prep material.
You are heading toward IT infrastructureAZ-900 is the better opener: same $99, same difficulty tier, but it feeds the Azure ladder (AZ-104 and beyond) that infrastructure careers actually climb.

PL-900 questions, answered

What is Exam PL-900?
PL-900 is Microsoft Power Platform Fundamentals. It earns the Microsoft Certified: Power Platform Fundamentals certification and covers the business value of the platform, environment management with Dataverse, Power Apps, Power Automate, and, from July 24, 2026, agents in Microsoft Copilot Studio. It costs $99 in the United States, confirmed in Microsoft's published pricing feed.
Is PL-900 being retired?
No. Microsoft's fundamentals retirement announcement named MS-900, MB-910 and MB-920, and PL-900 appears nowhere in it. Instead of retiring it, Microsoft rewrote it: the July 24, 2026 refresh removes the Power Pages domain and adds a Copilot Studio agents domain worth 20 to 25 percent. A rewrite that deep is a signal the exam has a future, not that it is winding down.
What changes on the PL-900 exam on July 24, 2026?
Three big things, all straight from Microsoft's change log. The entire Power Pages domain is removed. Every hands-on build objective is removed, including build a canvas app and build a model-driven app. And a brand-new domain, describe features and capabilities of agents in Microsoft Copilot Studio, is added at 20 to 25 percent. The business-value domain shrank while environment management and Power Automate grew.
How much does the PL-900 exam cost?
$99 in the United States. Unlike several newer Microsoft exams, PL-900 is listed in Microsoft's published per-exam pricing feed, so this figure is confirmed rather than assumed. That matches the other fundamentals exams in the feed, AZ-900, SC-900 and DP-900, which are also $99.
How many questions are on the PL-900 exam?
Microsoft publishes no question count for PL-900 and no pass rate for any of its exams. Its general guidance is that most exams contain 40 to 60 questions. The passing score is 700 on a scale of 1 to 1000, and Microsoft notes that a scaled score may not equal 70 percent of the points. Any site quoting an exact PL-900 question count invented it.
Does PL-900 include Power BI?
No. Power BI appears zero times in the current PL-900 skills-measured outline, which surprises people because older versions of the exam did cover it. If you want the Power BI exam, that is PL-300, Microsoft Power BI Data Analyst, a separate associate-level certification with no prerequisite. PL-900 covers Power Apps, Power Automate, Dataverse, environment administration and Copilot Studio agents.
Is PL-900 harder than AZ-900?
They are comparable in difficulty and both cost $99, but they test different worlds. AZ-900 covers Azure cloud concepts and services and feeds the infrastructure ladder. PL-900 covers the low-code stack and feeds the Power Platform and Dynamics ladders. PL-900 remains a describe-level exam; the word describe appears about 50 times in its outline, so it tests recognition and use cases, not hands-on configuration.
