AB-900 is Microsoft 365 Copilot and Agent Administration Fundamentals, and it is the exam standing where MS-900 used to stand. MS-900 retired on March 31, 2026. AB-900 has three domains: data protection and governance for Microsoft 365 and Copilot is the biggest at 35 to 40 percent, core Microsoft 365 features and objects is 30 to 35 percent, and basic Copilot and agent administration is 25 to 30 percent. Skills are stamped as of July 22, 2026. You need 700 out of 1000. The single most useful fact about this exam: the word "describe" appears 54 times in the retired MS-900 outline and zero times in AB-900. This is an administration exam wearing a fundamentals badge.

Last updated July 2026

MS-900 asked you to describe things. AB-900 asks you to do them.

Microsoft did not simply rename its Microsoft 365 fundamentals exam. It changed what the exam is for, and the clearest evidence is in the verbs. We counted every verb in the skills-measured section of both official study guides: the retired MS-900 guide and the live AB-900 guide. They are almost exactly the same length, 676 words against 655, so the comparison is fair.

Verb in the official skills outline MS-900 (retired) AB-900 (live)
Describe540
Identify426
Understand023
Perform04
Configure04
Monitor04

Fifty-four to zero. MS-900 was a describe-level exam from its first bullet to its last, and that is exactly how it was taught: flashcards of product names, a week of memorizing what SharePoint is for, done. AB-900 never once asks you to describe anything. It asks you to identify objects, understand tasks, and perform, configure and monitor real administration.

That matters for how you study, and it is why a recycled MS-900 question bank is worse than useless here. Recall questions will not prepare you for an exam whose largest domain is governance tasks. Feed the current study guide and your own admin-center notes into a generator and build a question bank from your own Copilot administration notes instead of drilling a bank written for an exam that no longer exists.

AB-900 skills measured, straight from Microsoft's study guide

Three domains, not MS-900's four. Governance is the biggest thing on the paper, which is not where anyone expects a fundamentals exam to put its weight.

Domain What is actually in it Weight
Understand data protection and governance tasks for Microsoft 365 and CopilotThe Purview domain. Sensitivity labels, data classification, data loss prevention, retention, and how Copilot inherits the permissions and labels already sitting on your content. The biggest domain, and the one MS-900 barely had. "Purview" appears 15 times in the outline.35 to 40%
Identify the core features and objects of Microsoft 365 servicesThe surviving piece of old MS-900, but narrower and more concrete. Core services and their objects, with SharePoint mentioned 6 times because SharePoint is where the content Copilot reads actually lives. Identity basics in Microsoft Entra.30 to 35%
Perform basic administrative tasks for Copilot and agentsThe genuinely new domain. Administering Copilot and agents from the Microsoft 365 admin center: licensing and assignment, readiness, and the operational tasks around deploying agents to a tenant. This is where "perform," "configure" and "monitor" live.25 to 30%

Add the first and third rows together and 60 to 70 percent of AB-900 is governance plus hands-on Copilot and agent administration. Only 30 to 35 percent is the "what is Microsoft 365" material that used to be nearly half of MS-900. If you are preparing from an MS-900 course, you are studying a third of the right exam.

Weights and bullets are current as of the study-guide version stamped July 22, 2026. Microsoft publishes no question count for AB-900 and no pass rate for any exam. Its general guidance is that most exams contain 40 to 60 questions. The passing score is 700 on a scale of 1 to 1000, and Microsoft notes a scaled score may not equal 70 percent of the points.

Two entire MS-900 domains were deleted. Here is the proof.

MS-900 had four domains. AB-900 has three. The two that vanished were not merged or trimmed, they were removed, and you can prove it by counting the words Microsoft uses. These counts come from the skills-measured section of each official outline.

Term in the official skills outline MS-900 (retired) AB-900 (live) What it tells you
cloud110The "Describe cloud concepts" domain (5 to 10% of MS-900) is gone
pricing40The "pricing, licensing, and support" domain (10 to 15%) is gone
Copilot518Copilot went from a mention to the subject of the exam
agent011Agents did not exist on MS-900 at all
Purview215Governance is now the largest domain
governance04A word MS-900 never used
SharePoint26Where the content Copilot reads actually lives
Word, Excel, OneDrive, Viva2, 1, 1, 10, 0, 0, 0The app tour is over

The last row is the one that will save you the most time. MS-900 spent real weight asking you to describe what Word, Excel, OneDrive and Viva are. AB-900 does not name any of them, not once. Every hour you spend on an MS-900 course's "Microsoft 365 apps" module is an hour spent on content that has been deleted from the exam.

And "cloud" going from eleven mentions to zero is the cleanest signal of all. Microsoft decided that in 2026 it no longer needs to explain what a public cloud is to someone administering Microsoft 365. It would rather spend that time on whether Copilot can read a file it should not.

How to build AB-900 practice questions that match the real blueprint

AB-900 is new enough that most banks on sale are recycled MS-900 content with the Copilot word pasted in. Build your own from current material instead.

1
Upload current material
The AB-900 study guide itself, Microsoft Learn modules, or your own admin-center notes. Nothing written before 2026.
2
Weight governance hardest
It is 35 to 40 percent, the biggest domain. Sensitivity labels, DLP and what Copilot is allowed to see.
3
Ask task questions
"Which admin center do you use to..." beats "what is..." on an exam whose verbs are perform, configure and monitor.
4
Skip cloud and pricing
Both domains are deleted. Zero mentions each. That is a full week back if you were following an MS-900 plan.

Should you take AB-900?

Microsoft retired three fundamentals certifications in the same wave: MS-900 on March 31, 2026, and the two Dynamics 365 fundamentals exams, MB-910 and MB-920, on December 31, 2025. If your plan was any of those, your plan needs updating. Here is the honest read by situation.

Your situation What to do
You were studying for MS-900Switch to AB-900 now. You cannot sit MS-900, it stopped being offered after March 31, 2026. Keep your Microsoft 365 service knowledge, drop the cloud-concepts and pricing modules entirely, and add Purview and Copilot administration.
You already hold MS-900You keep it. Microsoft says earned fundamentals certifications remain on the Active Certifications section of your transcript and do not expire. AB-900 is optional for you, and worth it only if you want the Copilot and governance content on your record.
You are a Microsoft 365 admin todayAB-900 is the closest thing to a credential for what your job actually became this year. Two thirds of it is governance and Copilot administration.
You want security, not productivityTake SC-900 instead. It is $99, confirmed, still live, and it is the security, compliance and identity fundamentals paper. The two overlap on Purview and Entra but AB-900 is about running Copilot, not defending a tenant.
You want the strongest fundamentals on a resumeAZ-900 is still the most widely recognized Microsoft fundamentals exam and it is not going anywhere. AB-900 is newer and narrower, which cuts both ways.

AB-900 questions, answered

What is Exam AB-900?
AB-900 is Microsoft 365 Copilot and Agent Administration Fundamentals. It earns the Microsoft 365 Certified: Copilot and Agent Administration Fundamentals certification. It is a live, generally available fundamentals exam with no prerequisite, and its skills were last stamped as of July 22, 2026. It is the Microsoft 365 fundamentals certification that now stands where MS-900 used to.
Did AB-900 replace MS-900?
In practice, yes, though Microsoft never printed the words "AB-900 replaces MS-900." MS-900 retired on March 31, 2026. The announcement that retired it promised a new fundamentals certification covering core Microsoft 365 services including Copilot and agents, plus identity and compliance essentials in Microsoft Entra and Microsoft Purview. That description matches AB-900 line for line, and AB-900 is now the only Microsoft 365 fundamentals certification on offer. We are telling you what Microsoft implied rather than what it stated, because the difference matters and most prep sites will not make it.
What are the AB-900 domain weights?
Three domains. Understand data protection and governance tasks for Microsoft 365 and Copilot is the largest at 35 to 40 percent. Identify the core features and objects of Microsoft 365 services is 30 to 35 percent. Perform basic administrative tasks for Copilot and agents is 25 to 30 percent.
How is AB-900 different from MS-900?
It is a different kind of exam wearing the same fundamentals badge. The word "describe" appears 54 times in the retired MS-900 outline and zero times in AB-900, replaced by "identify" 26 times, "understand" 23 times, and "perform" 4 times. Two whole MS-900 domains are gone: cloud concepts, and pricing, licensing and support. Copilot went from 5 mentions to 18, and Purview from 2 to 15.
How much does the AB-900 exam cost?
Microsoft does not list AB-900 in its published exam pricing feed, so no honest source can quote you a confirmed AB-900 fee. Every Microsoft fundamentals exam that is in the feed, including AZ-900, SC-900 and DP-900, is $99 in the United States, so $99 is the reasonable expectation. Confirm the price at checkout before you book, and treat any site stating a firm AB-900 price as guessing.
How many questions are on the AB-900 exam?
Microsoft publishes no question count for AB-900, and it publishes no pass rate for any of its exams. Its general guidance is that most exams contain 40 to 60 questions. Any site quoting an exact AB-900 question count or a pass percentage invented it. The passing score is 700 on a scale of 1 to 1000.
Is AB-900 worth it?
It is worth more than MS-900 was, because it tests work rather than vocabulary. Nearly two thirds of the paper is data protection, governance, and hands-on Copilot and agent administration, which is what employers are hiring for right now. If you want a Microsoft 365 credential in 2026, it is the only fundamentals option left.
Does my MS-900 certification still count?
Yes. Microsoft states that already-earned fundamentals certifications stay on the Active Certifications section of your Microsoft Learn transcript and do not expire. You keep the credential. What you cannot do is sit the MS-900 exam, which stopped being offered after March 31, 2026.
