For years, the analytics domain of DP-900 was a Synapse tour. Synapse Analytics was the answer to half the analytics questions, and every course, every video and every question bank was built around it.

Search the current official skills outline for "Synapse" and you get zero hits. The bullet that replaced it reads, in full: "Describe Microsoft cloud services for large-scale analytics, including Azure Databricks and Microsoft Fabric." Two named products, and Synapse is neither of them.

That last group is worth a second look. DP-900 is a data exam with zero mentions of Purview, zero mentions of machine learning, and zero mentions of Copilot. While Microsoft has been stuffing AI into its AI certifications, it left the data-fundamentals blueprint almost entirely AI-free. If a DP-900 course is selling you a module on generative AI, it is selling you something that is not on the exam.

The practical move is to stop trusting any bank you did not build, and instead turn the current study guide into practice questions yourself, so what you drill is what is actually examinable this month.

If you want one sentence that predicts most of your score: know when something is transactional and when it is analytical, and know which Azure service belongs on each side of that line. DP-900 is Microsoft Azure Data Fundamentals. It is a beginner-level exam that earns the Microsoft Certified: Azure Data Fundamentals certification. It costs $99 in the United States, has no prerequisite, and is not retired: its certification page carries no retirement notice.

What are the DP-900 domain weights?

Four domains. Describe core data concepts is 25 to 30 percent. Describe an analytics workload on Azure is also 25 to 30 percent. Identify considerations for relational data on Azure is 20 to 25 percent. Describe considerations for working with non-relational data on Azure is the smallest at 15 to 20 percent.

Is Azure Synapse still on DP-900?

No. Azure Synapse Analytics appears zero times in the current DP-900 skills outline. The large-scale analytics bullet now reads "Describe Microsoft cloud services for large-scale analytics, including Azure Databricks and Microsoft Fabric." Synapse was the anchor of this domain for years, and study material that still leads with it is out of date.

How much does the DP-900 exam cost?

$99 USD in the United States, confirmed in Microsoft's own published exam pricing feed. That is the standard fundamentals price, the same as AZ-900 and SC-900. Price varies by the country or region in which the exam is proctored, and tax may be added at checkout.

Is DP-900 changing in July 2026?

A refreshed objectives version takes effect on July 21, 2026. Microsoft's change log marks all four functional groups as "No change" and three sub-skills as "Minor": ways to represent data, capabilities of Azure storage, and considerations for real-time data analytics. No weight moved and no domain was renamed.

Is DP-900 hard?

It is the lightest Microsoft fundamentals exam by content volume. Its entire skills section is about 331 words, the shortest of any Microsoft exam we have measured.
