PL-300 earns the Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate certification, and it is not being retired. It runs 100 minutes, costs $165, needs 700 out of 1000, and has no prerequisite. Four domains: prepare the data, model the data, and visualize and analyze the data are each 25 to 30 percent, and manage and secure Power BI is 15 to 20 percent. The weights have not moved since January 31, 2023. What did change, in October 2024, was the vocabulary: the outline no longer contains the words "dataset" or "Power BI Desktop" anywhere, and now examines semantic models, DirectLake and Copilot instead.

Last updated July 2026

If your PL-300 course still says "dataset," it is teaching a retired vocabulary

Here is a check you can run in ten seconds, and it separates current PL-300 material from material written for an exam that no longer exists. Open Microsoft's live PL-300 study guide and search it for three words.

Word Times it appears in the current official outline What that tells you
"dataset"0Purged. The exam now says "semantic model" instead, and it says it four times.
"Power BI Desktop"0Also gone from the objectives.
"Fabric"0Microsoft never says the word, even though the vocabulary underneath is entirely Fabric's. PL-300's product is still listed as Power BI.
"Copilot"4Examinable now. Real objectives include "Create a narrative visual with Copilot" and "Use Copilot to summarize the underlying semantic model."
"DirectLake"1In a verbatim objective: "Choose between DirectLake, DirectQuery, and Import."

That is the whole tell. A course recorded before October 2024 will walk you through "creating a dataset in Power BI Desktop." The current paper does not use either term. It asks you to choose a storage mode between DirectLake, DirectQuery and Import, to configure a scheduled refresh on a semantic model, and to secure and govern Power BI items. Those are different words for a partly different job, and they are the words on the exam.

This is why generating questions from current material beats buying a bank. Upload Microsoft's own documentation for the services in the outline, or your own notes, and turn your Power BI notes into practice questions that use today's vocabulary rather than 2022's.

PL-300 skills measured, with the current weights

Four domains, from Microsoft's study guide for Exam PL-300, skills measured as of April 20, 2026. Three of the four are tied at 25 to 30 percent, which means the exam is close to evenly split across preparing, modeling and visualizing.

Domain What is actually in it Weight
Prepare the dataGet or connect to data sources, choose a storage mode ("Choose between DirectLake, DirectQuery, and Import"), connect to a shared semantic model, profile the data, clean and transform and load it in Power Query.25 to 30%
Model the dataDesign and build the semantic model: relationships and cardinality, star schema, DAX measures and calculated columns, time intelligence, role-playing dimensions, model performance and size.25 to 30%
Visualize and analyze the dataBuild and format reports, choose the right visual, enhance reports for usability and storytelling (bookmarks, drillthrough, tooltips, conditional formatting), identify patterns and trends, and the Copilot objectives: create a narrative visual with Copilot, use Copilot to create or suggest a report page.25 to 30%
Manage and secure Power BICreate and manage workspaces and assets, configure semantic model scheduled refresh, manage access to semantic models, and secure and govern Power BI items (row-level security, sensitivity labels, endorsement). The smallest domain, and the one most often skipped.15 to 20%

Microsoft gives 100 minutes for the assessment and does not publish a question count. The exam is proctored, offered in 10 languages, and has no prerequisite. As an associate role-based exam it is open book: you can browse learn.microsoft.com while you sit it, excluding Q&A, practice assessments and your profile, with no extra time granted.

The weights have not changed since January 2023, and the "updates" since then were not what you were told

Every time Microsoft stamps a new "skills measured as of" date on the study guide, the prep industry announces a rebalanced exam and sells you a refreshed course. Microsoft publishes a change log that says otherwise. Here is what actually happened.

Date What the change log actually says Did the weights move?
January 31, 2023The last real reweight. Preparing the data was raised from 15 to 20 percent up to 25 to 30 percent. Modeling and visualizing were each cut from 30 to 35 percent down to 25 to 30 percent.Yes. The only time.
April 23, 2024The fourth domain was renamed from "Deploy and maintain assets" to "Deploy and maintain items."No
October 21, 2024The real content overhaul. Six areas marked "Major." The objective group "Manage semantic models" was deleted and "Secure and govern Power BI items" was new. The fourth domain became "Manage and secure Power BI."No, but the content moved a lot
April 20, 2026All four functional groups marked "No change." Three sub-objective groups marked "Minor."No

Two things follow from that table, and they point in opposite directions. First, you do not need to panic about your time allocation: the percentages you studied in 2023 are still the percentages today. Second, and this is the part people miss, the exam's content was rebuilt in October 2024 without a single percentage moving. A course can therefore be "up to date on the weights" and still teach a deleted objective group. That is exactly what the stale material does.

Is PL-300 being replaced by Fabric? No, and here is the proof

This is the most common worry about PL-300 right now, and it rests on a real event that happened to a different certification. DP-600, the Fabric Analytics Engineer Associate, did replace something. It replaced DP-500. Microsoft's DP-500 page says so in plain words: "This certification and the renewal assessment are retired," and "On January 11, 2024, a new version of this certification, Microsoft Certified: Fabric Analytics Engineer Associate, became available."

PL-300 is a separate credential for a separate job, and it is absent from Microsoft's retired and retiring exam lists entirely. Other exams in the PL family are on those lists: PL-500 and PL-600 retired on June 30, 2026, and PL-200 is scheduled to retire on August 31, 2026. PL-300 is on neither list, and its certification page carries no banner.

If your job is to take a messy source, model it into a star schema, write the DAX and ship a report a business owner trusts, PL-300 is your exam and it is in no danger. If your job is to build the lakehouse that feeds twelve of those reports, look at DP-600. Neither is a prerequisite for the other, and Microsoft does not gate either one.

What the PL-300 prep industry is still printing today

We checked live PL-300 pages against Microsoft's own outline on the day this page was written. These are not old cached copies. They are what those sites serve right now.

Site What it publishes What Microsoft actually says
SPOTOA five-domain outline: "Prepare the data (15-20%), Model the data (30-35%), Visualize the data (25-30%), Analyze the data (10-15%), Deploy and maintain deliverables (10-15%)"That is the DA-100 outline, and DA-100 retired on March 31, 2022. PL-300 has four domains, not five.
WhizlabsTwo contradictory weight sets on one page (data modeling at "30-35%", preparing the data at "15-20%"), plus the claim that DA-100 and PL-300 "cover the same topics, concepts and knowledge domains and only names have been updated"Those are the pre-2023 weights. Modeling is 25 to 30 percent and preparing is 25 to 30 percent.
Nexacu"Use the Official DA-100 Practice exam to get ready for the real thing"DA-100 retired in March 2022. There is no official DA-100 practice exam to use.
DumpsArena"40-60 questions that must be completed within a time limit of 150 minutes"100 minutes. 150 is not any Microsoft duration for this exam.
CertspotsThe domain "Deploy and maintain assets (15-20%)"Renamed to "Manage and secure Power BI" in October 2024, with its content overhauled.

The pattern is the same one that shows up on every certification we research: the official source is free, public and specific, and a large part of the paid prep industry has not read it lately. Microsoft publishes no question count for PL-300, so every exact figure you see is someone's guess. It publishes no pass rate for any exam either.

How to make PL-300 practice questions from your own material

Questions generated from current source material stay correct when the vocabulary shifts. A question bank bought two years ago does not.

1
Upload the real source
Microsoft's documentation for the services in the outline, your DAX reference, or your own study notes.
2
Check the vocabulary
If your material says "dataset" and "Power BI Desktop," it predates October 2024 and is not the exam's language.
3
AI writes the questions
Exam-style items with an answer key and explanations, in the vocabulary of the material you gave it.
4
Do not skip domain four
Manage and secure Power BI is the smallest at 15 to 20 percent, and the most commonly ignored. It is still a fifth of the paper.

PL-300 questions, answered

What is on the PL-300 exam?
Four domains. Prepare the data, model the data, and visualize and analyze the data are each worth 25 to 30 percent. Manage and secure Power BI is worth 15 to 20 percent. Passing PL-300 earns the Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate certification.
Is PL-300 being retired or replaced by Fabric?
No. PL-300 does not appear on Microsoft's retired or retiring exam list, and its certification page carries no retirement banner. Its product is still listed as Power BI, not Microsoft Fabric. DP-600, the Fabric Analytics Engineer Associate certification, replaced DP-500, not PL-300.
How long is the PL-300 exam and how many questions?
Microsoft's certification page states you have 100 minutes to complete the assessment. Microsoft does not publish a question count for PL-300. Its only published guidance is that most exams typically contain 40 to 60 questions and that the number can vary by exam. Any site quoting an exact PL-300 count invented it.
How much does the PL-300 exam cost?
$165 USD in the United States. Price varies by the country or region in which the exam is proctored, and tax may be added.
Are there prerequisites for PL-300?
No. The word prerequisite does not appear on Microsoft's PL-300 certification page or study guide. Anyone can register. Microsoft recommends familiarity with Power BI and with data analysis, but nothing is enforced at registration.
When did the PL-300 domain weights last change?
January 31, 2023. The weights have not moved since. The April 20, 2026 update changed no weights at all: every functional group is marked No change in Microsoft's own change log. The real overhaul was October 21, 2024, and it changed the content, not the percentages.
Does PL-300 expire?
Yes. Microsoft's associate certifications expire after 12 months. Renewal is free, unproctored and open book on Microsoft Learn, in a six-month window before expiry, and passing extends the certification one year from its expiration date rather than from the day you pass.
What score do you need to pass PL-300?
700 or greater on a scale of 1 to 1000. Microsoft explicitly notes that because this is a scaled score, it may not equal 70 percent of the points. Microsoft publishes no pass rate for PL-300 or any other exam, so treat any pass-rate figure you see as invented.
