Every scored question maps back to one of the eight CACREP content areas, which are the same eight areas your master's program was accredited to teach. What is on the NCE: the six work behavior domains

NBCC publishes the exact number of scored items per domain, which is more specific than most credentialing bodies manage and genuinely useful for planning study time. Because the exam has 160 scored items and not 100, the item count and the percentage are different numbers, so read the middle column rather than converting in your head.

The practical read on this table is blunt. Counseling Skills and Interventions plus Areas of Clinical Focus are 95 of the 160 scored items, nearly 60 percent of your score. Candidates who spend their last two weeks rereading ethics because it feels testable are optimizing a 19 item domain while leaving a 95 item block underdrilled. Those six domains are then cross-referenced against the eight CACREP content areas your program taught: professional counseling orientation and ethical practice, social and cultural diversity, human growth and development, career development, counseling and helping relationships, group counseling and group work, assessment and testing, and research and program evaluation. If a whole CACREP area is a blank spot for you, that is the fastest fix available before test day.

The NCE changes on July 1, 2027, and most study material has not caught up

NBCC has published examination specifications for a new NCE that takes effect on July 1, 2027. It is not a refresh of the current outline. The question count, the number of answer choices, the domain structure and the entire scoring model all change. The 2027 domain blueprint is genuinely different

The new blueprint is not the old six domains renamed. Weight moves toward legal and ethical work and toward the parts of the job that happen outside the room, which is what the 2024 to 2025 work analysis found counselors actually spend their time on.

One detail in the new specifications is worth flagging because it tells you where the profession is heading. Under Professional Development, NBCC lists a work task for engaging in training related to the ethical and legal use of artificial intelligence. That task did not exist in the outline built on the 2019 job analysis. If you sit the new form, AI use in clinical documentation and communication is fair game.

The practical advice is simple. If you are testing before July 2027, study the current outline and ignore the new one. If you graduate after that date, buy nothing that predates the new specifications without checking it has been rewritten, and weight your own study toward ethics, intake and the documentation side of the job. Generating your own questions straight from current coursework sidesteps the problem entirely, because your program is teaching to the present, not to a 2019 job analysis.

How the NCE is scored, and why nobody can tell you the passing number

Search for the NCE passing score and you will be told you need somewhere between 90 and 110 correct out of 160. Those numbers are estimates repeated between prep sites, and NBCC's own handbook explains why no single number can be right.

The cut score is produced by a standard-setting process in which a committee of subject matter experts reviews every question on a form and judges what a minimally qualified candidate would be expected to achieve. NBCC then applies statistical equating, which ties the cut score on a given form to how difficult the items on that form turned out to be. In NBCC's own words, the cut score of each examination version will vary slightly.

That is fairness working as designed: sit a harder form and the bar moves down to match. It also means a fixed percentage target is fiction. Anyone quoting you an exact raw score is quoting a form they cannot have seen.

One thing that is fixed on the current exam is the arithmetic of the raw score. Each of the 160 scored items is worth exactly one point, there is no weighting between domains, and there is no penalty for guessing. Leaving an item blank is strictly worse than a guess.

From July 2027 the picture gets clearer in one respect and murkier in another. The passing point becomes a published 360 on a 100 to 500 scale, the same on every form. But NBCC states explicitly that scaled scores do not represent raw scores and cannot be used to determine the percentage correct, and gives the example that scoring 400 does not mean 400 out of 500 or 80 percent. Expect that to be misreported constantly once the new exam goes live.

The takeaway for how you study is the same either way. Use practice results to locate a weak domain, not to forecast a score.
