What changed: the current test plan is not the one most study material teaches

NHA rebuilt the CPT test plan on a job analysis completed in 2024. The previous outline had been in place since a 2016 job analysis, and a large amount of phlebotomy study material still on sale and still ranking in search teaches those retired weights. The shift is not cosmetic. Here is the side by side from NHA's two published test plans.

The headline is Special Collections. It went from the smallest domain at 7 items to 12, which is a 71 percent increase in its share of the exam. If your study plan treats blood cultures, glucose tolerance testing, blood bank specimens and pediatric draws as a footnote because an older review book did, you are underpreparing for roughly one question in eight. Patient Preparation moved the other way, losing 3 items.

How the NHA phlebotomy exam is scored, and the two numbers everybody gets wrong

NHA converts your raw score into a scaled score between 200 and 500. You need 390 to pass. In NHA's own words, scaling exists so that the same level of performance is required to meet the passing standard regardless of which form of the assessment a candidate takes. That sentence is doing a lot of work, and it is the reason two very common claims about this exam are wrong.

Wrong claim 1: the exam is 100 questions with 80 scored

This shows up constantly, including in AI-generated summaries. NHA's own CPT test plan states 100 scored items plus 20 pretest items, which is 120 questions in total. The 80-scored figure belongs to other credentials, not the CPT. If a practice test tells you it is simulating an 80 question scored exam, it was built from the wrong specification.

Wrong claim 2: 390 equals 70 percent correct

NHA does not publish a raw-to-scaled conversion table, and it cannot publish a single one, because the conversion is what compensates for the difficulty of each exam form. A slightly harder form needs fewer raw correct answers to reach 390 than an easier one. Any site quoting you a fixed percentage or a fixed number of misses is presenting an estimate as if it were NHA's standard.

The useful takeaway is not a target percentage. It is that you cannot bank on a comfortable margin, so the sensible strategy is to get each of the five domains to the point where you are answering confidently rather than working out which two options to eliminate.
