Use Kahoot when the session has a right answer. It is a scored quiz with a leaderboard, per-question reporting and enough competitive energy to wake up a room after lunch. Use Mentimeter when the session has no right answer. Word clouds, scales, rankings, open text and live Q&A pull opinions out of an audience and put them on the screen, which is what an all-hands, a strategy workshop or a retro actually needs.
On price the models differ in a way that matters for large audiences. Mentimeter charges per presenter and its paid plans advertise unlimited participants: $11.99 per presenter per month billed yearly for Basic, $24.99 for Pro. Kahoot 360 charges per license and gates audience size by tier, from 50 participants at the entry level up through 200, 1,000, 2,000 and 5,000. If you run big sessions, Mentimeter's flat pricing is usually cheaper. If you run scored training for a team of 30, Kahoot's entry tier is fine.
A lot of teams end up owning both, one for training and one for meetings. What neither does well is turn your 40 page policy document into a reviewed set of knowledge-check questions. That is the work.

Two things to notice. Kahoot's business pricing page lists in euros by default with a currency selector, and all prices exclude tax, so a US budget line needs the converted figure rather than the number on the page. And the same participant limits apply to live and self-paced kahoots, so an asynchronous compliance refresher sent to 400 employees hits the same ceiling a live session does. That single detail decides the tier for most L&D teams.
Which one should you actually pick
Ask what you need to walk out of the session with. If the answer is evidence, meaning a record showing that 34 of 40 people can identify a phishing email after the training, that is a scored quiz and Kahoot is built for it. Its reports tell you which question the room got wrong, which is the only part of the data anyone acts on.
If the answer is insight, meaning you need to know what the team thinks about the reorg, which priority they would cut, or how confident they feel going into a launch, that is Mentimeter. Word clouds and scales surface things people will not say out loud in a meeting, and the anonymity is the feature. Running that as a quiz would be nonsense.
Budget usually decides the edge cases. Mentimeter's per-presenter pricing with unlimited participants means a team of two facilitators can run a 2,000 person town hall for less than $300 a year. Kahoot's tiered model prices the same event much higher, because you are buying audience capacity. Flip it around for a small scored training program and Kahoot's entry tier is the cheaper, better-fitting tool.
One more practical consideration for regulated training. Neither tool is a learning management system. The step neither platform does for you
Both tools give you a blank interactive slide. If the content is a 40 page policy, a vendor SOP or a compliance manual, filling that slide is the whole job.

Can Mentimeter score a quiz?
Yes, it has quiz slides with points and a leaderboard. But scored assessment is a side feature rather than the design center, so the reporting is thinner than Kahoot's if you need to show which employees passed. For a fun round inside a workshop it is perfectly adequate.
Can either tool build questions from my training deck?
Both import slides so the interactive moments live inside your existing deck, and Kahoot's higher tiers include AI creation from files. Neither reliably converts a long policy manual into a reviewed knowledge check. Generating the questions from the source document first and pasting the approved ones in is faster and keeps the wording tied to the material employees were given.
Do we need both tools?
Plenty of L&D teams do run both, and at Mentimeter Basic plus a Kahoot entry license the combined cost is roughly $400 a year for one facilitator. Before buying two, check what your existing stack already does. Many LMS and video platforms include polling that covers the Mentimeter use case adequately for internal meetings.
