For study guides, typed notes and course handouts
You already wrote the notes. Upload the Word file and PDFQuiz writes the questions and answers for you, then gives you one text file for Quizlet's Import box. Nobody has to split ten pages of paragraphs into cards by hand.

The short answer
Quizlet imports text, not Word files, so the document has to become term and definition pairs first. PDFQuiz reads the .docx, writes the question and answer pairs, and its export menu produces a file with one card per line and a tab between the two sides. Paste it into Quizlet's Import box, check the preview and the set is built.
PDFQuiz is an independent tool and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Quizlet. The Quizlet download is included in paid plans, see the pricing page.
Notes are written to be read, flashcards to be answered. Here is one paragraph from an invented study guide and the lines the Quizlet file holds after conversion.
Monetary policy tools
The Federal Reserve steers short term rates mainly through the federal funds target range. It also pays interest on reserve balances, runs open market operations that buy or sell Treasury securities, and can change the discount rate it charges banks. Raising the target range makes borrowing costlier and slows demand.
What does the Federal Reserve mainly use to steer short term rates?
The federal funds target range
What do open market operations involve?
Buying or selling Treasury securities
What happens to borrowing costs and demand when the target range rises?
Borrowing costs more and demand slows
Illustration of the workflow with an invented document. Your cards depend on what your file says, and you edit them before exporting.
Four steps. The document does not need reformatting, because headings, bullets and plain paragraphs are all read as they are.
1
Add the Word file, or several. Up to 10 files at once and 50 MB each, so a full set of handouts becomes one study set.
2
Choose how many questions you want and which types. Single choice, multiple answer, true or false and matching all export cleanly.
3
Skim them once. Reword a vague prompt, fix an answer, drop a card on something the exam will not cover.
4
Download the Quizlet file, open Create, choose Import and paste. Tab between term and definition, New line between cards.
Study guides tend to bury the testable part inside long sentences. A line like "the Fed raises the target range, which makes borrowing costlier" is one idea with a cause and an effect, and a good card asks for the effect. That is the judgment a generator makes for every paragraph, and it is why a quick read-through before export pays off.
If your Word file is a full chapter summary, consider splitting it by exam topic before upload. Four sets of thirty cards are easier to rotate through in Quizlet than one set of a hundred and twenty.
The download is plain text, one line per card, which is the layout Quizlet's Import box reads. Each question type is written like this.
The same quiz also exports as a Word or PDF question sheet with a separate answer key, so one upload gives you the flashcards for your phone and a printable practice test.
The right route depends on how your document is written and how many cards you need.
Comparing flashcard apps before you commit? Our Quizlet alternative comparison shows where each one wins.
A semester of lecture notes in Word becomes a set per exam topic, so revision starts with recall instead of rereading.
The study guide you already hand out can become a class set students open on their phones, plus a printed quiz with an answer key.
Course manuals and exam outlines delivered as Word files turn into drill cards for a license or certification test.
Upload the .docx to PDFQuiz, generate the questions and open the export menu on your quiz. Download the Quizlet file, then in Quizlet choose Create, select Import and paste the contents. Leave the term separator on Tab and the card separator on New line, and check the preview before you build the set.
Quizlet's own upload options change from time to time, so look at what your account offers today. The route here does not depend on them. You turn the document into cards first, then paste plain text, which the Import box has always accepted.
Then you may not need a generator at all. Put a tab between each term and its definition, one pair per line, and paste the lot into Import. A generator earns its cost on paragraphs, outlines and study guides where the cards still have to be written.
It reads the text of the document, including headings, bullets and the text inside tables, and uses the headings to keep questions tied to the right topic. Images, charts and text boxes with pictures in them do not carry over. Add those inside Quizlet afterwards.
Yes, with one extra step. In Google Docs use File, Download, Microsoft Word (.docx). In Pages use File, Export To, Word. Then upload the file. PDFQuiz also reads PDF, PowerPoint, text and scanned images, up to 10 files at once and 50 MB each.
Yes. Upload up to 10 files in one go, for example three weeks of lecture notes and a professor's review sheet, and the questions are drawn from all of them. For an exam with separate topics, one upload per topic gives you smaller sets that are easier to review.
Yes. Every question can be reworded, corrected or deleted, and you can add your own. The Quizlet file is built from the quiz exactly as it stands when you click download, so your edits are in the set.
Generating and studying the quiz works on the free tier. The Quizlet download belongs to the paid plans. Student plans start at $79 a year or $54 a semester, and the full price list is on the pricing page.
Working from slides or a PDF instead? The PowerPoint to Quizlet converter and the PDF to Quizlet converter use the same import, and the Word to quiz tool builds a full scored quiz without Quizlet.
