In short: choose on where the questions have to end up. Questgen exports LMS formats such as QTI and Moodle XML. PDFQuiz exports Canvas QTI 1.2, QTI 2.1 for Blackboard and other LMS platforms, Moodle GIFT, and Kahoot spreadsheets from the quiz list download menu on Pro and higher. QTI includes choice questions only; GIFT includes all six types with explanations as feedback. PDFQuiz also exports PDF and editable Word with an optional answer key on Plus and higher for printing, emailing or grading by hand. Both accept PDFs, Questgen has a free tier and PDFQuiz has a demo, so compare question quality and the export format your course needs.

Why look for a Questgen alternative

A document-first AI question generator with simple, editable export

Questgen is a solid AI quiz generator, and plenty of educators use it to turn text, PDFs and videos into question banks and LMS exports. If that matches your stack, it does the job. People searching for a Questgen alternative usually want something more specific: a workflow centered on uploading their own files, native support for PowerPoint and Word, the freedom to edit every question, and a clean PDF or editable Word file at the end rather than a locked package. PDFQuiz is built for exactly that.

Built around your documents

Start from a PDF textbook chapter, a Word study guide, a PowerPoint lecture or a photo of handwritten notes. PDFQuiz reads the source and writes questions from that exact content, so the test matches your material rather than a generic topic summary.

Question types that fit the job

Generate single choice, multiple answer, true or false, fill in the blank, matching and open ended questions. Pick the format that suits a quick knowledge check or a graded exam, then edit any question before you share it.

Clean PDF and Word export

Hand out a printed test, post it online, or drop it into your own materials. Export a polished PDF or an editable Word document, with or without an answer key, in one click. No conversion step and no locked file.

PowerPoint and Word, not just PDFs

Upload slide decks and Word files directly. PDFQuiz handles PowerPoint, Word, plain text and images alongside PDFs, so you rarely have to convert a file before you can build a test from it. See how PowerPoint to quiz and Word to quiz work in practice.

Fast on long material

Upload a whole chapter or a fifty-slide deck and PDFQuiz still returns a full test in seconds. Set the page range when you only need part of a file, and skip the manual question-by-question setup entirely.

You stay in control

AI gives you a strong first draft, then you review and adjust. Reword a question, fix an answer, set the difficulty and choose how many questions you want. The finished test is yours, not a black box.

How PDFQuiz and Questgen compare

An honest, side-by-side look so you can decide which fits your workflow. Both tools use AI to generate questions. The difference is focus, the range of source files and how you get the finished test out.
