No lives, no caps to grind

In short: these two tools do different jobs, and picking on price would be a mistake. Gizmo is a gamified mobile study app built around flashcards, spaced repetition, lives and streaks, and it is genuinely good at building a daily review habit for a student revising for exams. PDFQuiz is a web tool that turns a PDF, Word file or slide deck into a graded quiz or test you can print or export to editable Word with an answer key. If you want something to open on your phone every morning, Gizmo wins. If you need an assessment to hand to a class or a crew, that is this tool.

Why look for a Gizmo alternative

A quiz-first tool, not a study game to grind

Gizmo is a slick study app, and a lot of students enjoy the streaks, lives and spaced-repetition loop on their phone. If you want a daily review habit, that game design works. People searching for a Gizmo alternative usually want something different: a tool that takes a document and gives back a real quiz or graded test, with the question types they need, an answer key, and a clean PDF or Word file at the end. No daily lives to refill, no weekly subscription clock, and nothing locked behind a game. That is the whole job PDFQuiz is built for.

Built around your documents

Start from a PDF textbook chapter, a Word study guide, a PowerPoint lecture or a photo of handwritten notes. PDFQuiz reads the source and writes questions from that exact content, so the test matches your material rather than a generic topic summary.

Real question types, not just cards

Generate single choice, multiple answer, true or false, fill in the blank, matching and open ended questions. Pick the format that suits a quick knowledge check or a graded exam, then edit any question before you share it.

Printable PDF and Word export

Hand out a printed test, post it online, or drop it into your own materials. Export a polished PDF or an editable Word document, with or without an answer key, in one click. No locked study set, just a file you own.

No lives, hearts or daily caps

Gizmo's free plan runs on a lives system and limits you to roughly ten AI quizzes a day. PDFQuiz skips the game mechanics entirely, so you build the quiz you need when you need it and move on with your work.

Works right in your browser

No app to install and no phone-first workflow. Upload a file, generate a test, and export it from any computer. That fits how teachers and trainers actually build assessments at a desk.

For teachers and trainers, not just students

Gizmo is aimed at student self-study. PDFQuiz works for educators and corporate trainers who need to build, grade and hand out real assessments from their own source files, with an answer key included.

How PDFQuiz and Gizmo compare

An honest, side-by-side look so you can pick the right fit. Both use AI and both can work from a PDF. The difference is focus: a dedicated quiz and test maker versus a gamified flashcard study app.

Simple process

From document to test in three steps

1

Upload your file

Drag in a PDF, Word document, PowerPoint deck, text file or image of your notes. Choose the page range if you only need part of it.

2

Generate the questions

Pick the question type and how many questions you want. The AI reads the document and writes questions with answers in seconds.

3

Edit, share or export

Review and tweak any question, then share a link for online taking or export a clean PDF or Word file to print and hand out.

Who switches to PDFQuiz

If your work ends with a quiz or test rather than a flashcard streak, this is the Gizmo alternative built for you.

Teachers and professors

Turn a textbook chapter or lesson PDF into a graded test, export it with an answer key, and assign it to a class. Build a whole unit's worth of assessments in an afternoon instead of a week, from K12 through university, starting from the quiz maker for teachers.

Corporate trainers

Convert onboarding decks, compliance manuals and product sheets into knowledge checks. Confirm that staff understood the material without writing every question by hand or building a flashcard set.

Students and exam takers

Upload your lecture notes or a study guide and drill yourself with practice questions. Active recall from your own material beats rereading, and you can export a clean practice test to print, with no daily lives to ration. The practice test generator and the notes to quiz tool both feed that routine.

Frequently asked questions about the Gizmo alternative

What is the best Gizmo alternative?

For people who mainly need quizzes and tests rather than a gamified study app, PDFQuiz is the strongest Gizmo alternative. It reads PDFs, Word files, PowerPoint slides and images, writes questions from that exact content, and exports a clean PDF or editable Word file with an answer key. Gizmo is built around flashcards, spaced repetition and a lives-and-streaks game loop, so a document-first quiz maker fits teaching and assessment work better.

Is there a free alternative to Gizmo?

Yes. PDFQuiz is a free Gizmo alternative you can try without a subscription or a weekly charge. Upload a document and generate a quiz to judge the quality before you decide to pay. Gizmo has a free tier too, but it caps you at about 10 AI quizzes a day and uses a daily lives system, so the right pick depends on whether you want a study game or a focused quiz and test maker.

What is Gizmo used for?

Gizmo is a gamified AI study app for phones and the web. Students use it to turn notes, PDFs, YouTube videos and audio into flashcards and quizzes, then review them with spaced repetition and a lives-and-hearts game loop. Quizzes are one piece of a larger self-study product. PDFQuiz focuses only on turning your uploaded documents into quizzes and tests you can edit, share, print and export.

How is PDFQuiz different from Gizmo?

Gizmo is a mobile-first study game with flashcards, spaced repetition and daily lives. PDFQuiz does one thing: it turns a PDF, Word file or slide deck into a quiz or graded test with multiple choice, true or false, fill in the blank, matching and open ended questions, then exports a clean PDF or editable Word document. It suits teachers, trainers and professors building real assessments, not just students drilling on a phone.

Does Gizmo make quizzes from a PDF?

Yes, Gizmo can generate flashcards and quizzes from an uploaded PDF as part of its study tools, though the free plan limits how many you can make each day. If you want more control over the test itself, including the question type, the page range, an answer key and a printable PDF or editable Word export, a dedicated quiz maker like PDFQuiz is built for that exact job.

Can I make a printable test, not just flashcards?

Yes. PDFQuiz exports a polished PDF or an editable Word document, with or without an answer key, so you can print a test and hand it out or drop it into your own materials. Gizmo centers on on-screen flashcards and a spaced-repetition game, so PDFQuiz is the better fit when you need a real, printable assessment you own.
