The short answer

A continuing education post-test has to come from the course content, cover the stated learning objectives, and clear whatever item count and passing score your accreditor sets. For NASBA registered self-study CPE that means at least five scored final examination questions per CPE credit, three review questions per credit inside the course, and a cumulative passing grade of at least 70 percent, with no true or false items on the scored exam. What each accreditor actually requires of the assessment

The rules are not the same across professions, and the strictest ones are on the accounting side. This is the state of play as of July 2026, drawn from each body's own published standards. Always confirm against your current agreement, because these get revised.

The number that catches most new sponsors out is the review question requirement. Three per credit sits inside the course, separate from the final exam, and they are not scored for credit. A ten credit self-study course therefore needs thirty review questions and fifty scored exam items before it can go on sale, which is exactly the kind of volume that makes hand writing every item unworkable.

How to build the post-test from your course

Overshoot the item count

If the exam needs twenty five, generate sixty. Culling is quick, and the surplus becomes next year's revision and your retake form.

Map each item to an objective

Step three is the one that survives an audit. A reviewer rarely argues with a well written question, but they will ask which objective it measures, and a course where two objectives have no assessment behind them is a finding waiting to happen.

Matching the question type to the learning objective

A learning objective written with a verb like calculate cannot honestly be measured by a recall question. This is the mapping that keeps an item bank defensible, and it is also the fastest way to spot an objective that was written too vaguely to assess at all.

Generated questions are strongest on the first three rows and weakest on the last one, which no written test measures well anyway. Expect to rewrite the distractors on the evaluate items yourself, since knowing which wrong answer a practitioner would plausibly pick is professional judgment, not something extracted from a document.

How many questions does a continuing education final exam need?

For NASBA registered self-study CPE the floor is five scored final examination questions per CPE credit, so a five credit course needs at least twenty five. The same standards call for three review questions per credit inside the course itself. Other accreditors set their own rules, so check yours, but five per credit is a sane default even where nothing is mandated.

What is the passing score for a CPE self-study exam?

A cumulative minimum of 70 percent on the final examination, under the AICPA and NASBA Statement on Standards for Continuing Professional Education Programs. Sponsors cannot award CPE credit below that threshold. Many sponsors set their own bar higher, but 70 percent is the floor a registered sponsor has to enforce.

Can you use true or false questions on a CE final exam?

Not on a NASBA self-study final examination. True or false and yes or no items are not accepted as scored final exam questions, though they are allowed among the review questions inside the course, where they simply do not count toward the required three per credit. Nursing and medical CE accreditors are generally more flexible.

Does nursing continuing education require a post-test?

Not universally. ANCC accredited providers set their own criteria for successful completion during planning, and a post-test is one option among several, alongside a self reflection assessment or a return demonstration. The criteria have to fit the educational need and the format, so a hands on skills activity may verify competence without any written test at all.

How do you write a post-test from an existing CE course?

Start from the material rather than from memory. Upload the course handout, slide deck, or manuscript, generate a pool two or three times larger than the exam needs, then keep the items that map to a stated learning objective and cut the rest. What is the difference between a review question and a final exam question?

Under NASBA standards a learner must not be able to reach the final assessment before completing the course content, so the two serve genuinely different jobs.

Can this export questions into my LMS?

There is no QTI or SCORM export, so the last step is pasting items into your LMS or CE platform question editor. That is usually fine, because you were going to review every item against your objectives anyway.

Can I build two versions of the exam for retakes?
