AZ-802 turns two exams into one. Its title is Administering Windows Server, and it earns the Windows Server Administrator Associate certification. Until now that certification took two exams, AZ-800 and AZ-801. Microsoft's page states plainly that AZ-800 and AZ-801 will retire on September 30, 2026, after which AZ-802 is the only path. It is still in beta, which means you do not get your score on the day. It needs 700 out of 1000, has seven domains, and the biggest is Active Directory at 20 to 25 percent. And despite landing in the middle of Microsoft's Cloud and AI rebrand, there is no AI on it at all.

Two exams become one, and the deadline is September 30, 2026

This is the friendliest change in Microsoft's whole retirement wave. Every other retiring certification is being replaced by something with a different name, a different role and a rewritten outline. Windows Server admins get the opposite: the same certification, the same job, and half the exams.

The wording on Microsoft's certification page is unusually direct: "Related exams AZ-800 and AZ-801 will retire on September 30, 2026. During this transition, these exams may continue to appear on this certification page. Once they retire, they will be removed, and AZ-802 will remain as the available path to earn this certification."

So what you do depends entirely on where you are standing right now.

Your situation What to do
You passed AZ-800, but not AZ-801 yetSit AZ-801 before September 30, 2026 and finish the path you started. You are one exam from the certification either way, and AZ-801 is a scored, out-of-beta exam with an official practice assessment. That is worth more than the novelty of AZ-802.
You have passed neither, and you are starting nowTake AZ-802. One exam instead of two, one fee instead of two, and you will not be studying for a paper that disappears in September. Accept that you wait for your score.
You already hold the certificationDo nothing. The certification is not retiring, only the exams underneath it. Your credential and its renewal path are unaffected.
Your employer is paying and wants it this quarterAZ-800 plus AZ-801 is the only route that gives a result on the day. Beta scores can take weeks. If there is a deadline attached to the reimbursement, the old path is the safe one until September 30.

AZ-802 is in beta, and that changes how you should plan

The certification page title still reads "Microsoft Certified: Windows Server Administrator Associate (beta)." That parenthesis carries real consequences that most prep sites do not mention.

You do not get a score when you finish. Microsoft's explanation is that beta exams are not scored immediately because it is still gathering data on the quality of the questions. You sit the exam, you walk out, and you wait until the beta process completes and the exam goes live before you learn whether you passed. If a promotion, a job offer or a reimbursement deadline depends on the certificate, that wait is a planning problem, not a footnote.

The other consequence is that there is no official practice assessment. Microsoft's own line is that practice assessments are "usually available within 8 weeks of the exam being out of beta and generally available." AZ-802 is not out of beta, so that clock has not started. Any site selling "real AZ-802 exam questions" today is selling something it could not have obtained.

There is an upside worth naming. Beta exams are typically offered at a reduced fee, and the content is drawn from the same skills outline that the live exam will use. The material is not a mystery. Microsoft published the whole outline, which is the only source anyone honest is working from. Feed that outline and your own server documentation into a generator and you can build a question bank from your own Windows Server runbooks that matches the exam's scope exactly.

AZ-802 skills measured, straight from Microsoft's study guide

Seven domains. Active Directory is the biggest single block, and monitoring and troubleshooting is weighted more heavily than most people expect.

Domain What is actually in it Weight
Deploy and manage AD DSDomain controllers locally and in Azure, Read-Only Domain Controllers and RODC account security, and troubleshooting FSMO roles. Multi-site, multi-domain and multi-forest work: domain and forest trust relationships, AD DS sites, and replication. Users, groups, service accounts. Group Policy and Group Policy preferences. The largest domain.20 to 25%
Manage storage and file servicesWindows Server file and storage services, shares and permissions, and the storage stack.15 to 20%
Monitor and troubleshoot Windows Server environmentsThe domain most candidates underweight. It is worth as much as storage and more than virtualization, and it is where the scenario questions live.15 to 20%
Manage Windows Server instances and workloads in a hybrid environmentWindows Admin Center on-premises and in the Azure portal. Remote management with PowerShell, including double-hop and Just Enough Administration. SSH and remote desktop. Azure Arc enabled instances, device configuration via Arc, VM extensions on non-Azure machines, Azure Update Manager, and Automation runbooks.10 to 15%
Manage virtual machinesHyper-V and guest VMs: Enhanced Session Mode, PowerShell Direct and SSH Direct for Linux guests, nested virtualization, memory settings, integration services, device assignment, GPU partitioning, checkpoints, and high availability.10 to 15%
Implement and manage an on-premises and hybrid networking infrastructureThe networking layer connecting on-premises Windows Server to Azure.10 to 15%
Secure Windows Server infrastructureHardening the server estate and the identity plane that sits on top of it.10 to 15%

The thing to plan around is that AD DS plus monitoring and troubleshooting is 35 to 45 percent of the exam between them. Candidates coming from the AZ-800 and AZ-801 path tend to have spent their revision on hybrid Azure integration, because that was the flavor of the old two-exam split. On AZ-802, Active Directory fundamentals and the ability to diagnose a broken server carry more weight than Arc does.

Microsoft does not publish a question count for AZ-802, and publishes no pass rate for any exam. Its general guidance is that most exams "typically contain between 40-60 questions." Microsoft's exam pricing feed does not currently list a US price for AZ-802, which is normal for a beta exam. Beta exams are usually discounted. Confirm the fee at checkout rather than trusting a third-party figure.

The odd one out: there is no AI on this AI-wave exam

AZ-802 arrived in the same retirement announcement as SC-500, AI-200, AI-103, AI-300 and AI-901. Every other exam in that wave was rebuilt around Microsoft Foundry, agents and generative AI. It would be reasonable to assume AZ-802 got the same treatment. It did not.

Term Times it appears in AZ-802's official outline
Agent0
Foundry0
Generative AI0
Machine learning0
Copilot0

Five zeros. AZ-802 is a straight Windows Server administration exam: Active Directory, Group Policy, Hyper-V, storage, networking, and troubleshooting, with Azure Arc as the hybrid bridge. The consolidation of AZ-800 and AZ-801 is happening for its own reasons, and it got swept into the same announcement because the timing lined up.

This matters if you are choosing what to study. Do not let the surrounding noise convince you that you need to learn Foundry to pass a Windows Server exam. Your revision time belongs on FSMO roles, replication topology, trust relationships, and being able to read an event log.

How to build AZ-802 practice questions during the beta

No official assessment exists and none is coming until the exam leaves beta. Generate from the outline and your own estate instead.

1
Upload your runbooks
Microsoft's Windows Server documentation, your AD design docs, your own build and recovery runbooks.
2
Weight AD DS first
It is 20 to 25 percent, the biggest domain, and FSMO and replication are where the hard questions live.
3
AI writes the questions
Exam-style items with an answer key and explanations, scoped to the current seven-domain outline.
4
Drill troubleshooting
15 to 20 percent, and the domain candidates consistently under-prepare because it is hard to revise from a book.

AZ-802 questions, answered

What is Exam AZ-802?
AZ-802 is Microsoft's exam titled Administering Windows Server. It earns the Microsoft Certified: Windows Server Administrator Associate certification, and it replaces the two-exam AZ-800 and AZ-801 path. As of July 2026 the certification page still carries the beta marker in its title.
Are AZ-800 and AZ-801 being retired?
Yes. Microsoft's certification page states that related exams AZ-800 and AZ-801 will retire on September 30, 2026. Once they retire they will be removed from the certification page and AZ-802 will remain as the only available path to earn the Windows Server Administrator Associate certification.
Do I need to take both AZ-800 and AZ-801 or just AZ-802?
Just AZ-802, and that is the point of the change. The old path required passing two separate exams. AZ-802 collapses both into a single exam covering the same certification. If you have already passed AZ-800 but not AZ-801, sit AZ-801 before September 30, 2026 to complete that path, or switch to AZ-802.
Is AZ-802 still in beta?
Yes, as of July 2026. Microsoft's certification page title reads Windows Server Administrator Associate (beta). Beta exams are not scored immediately: Microsoft states you will not receive your result until the exam completes the beta process and goes live, because it is still gathering data on question quality.
What are the AZ-802 domain weights?
Seven domains. Deploy and manage AD DS is the largest at 20 to 25 percent. Manage storage and file services and monitor and troubleshoot Windows Server environments are each 15 to 20 percent. Hybrid workloads, virtual machines, networking, and securing Windows Server infrastructure are each 10 to 15 percent.
Is there an official AZ-802 practice assessment?
No. Microsoft states practice assessments are usually available within 8 weeks of an exam leaving beta and becoming generally available, and AZ-802 is still in beta. No official AZ-802 question bank exists, so any product advertising real AZ-802 exam questions was not written from one.
What score do you need to pass AZ-802?
700 or greater on a scale of 1 to 1000, stated directly on Microsoft's certification page. Because it is a scaled score, Microsoft notes it may not equal 70 percent of the points. Microsoft publishes no question count and no pass rate for AZ-802 or any exam.
Is AZ-802 an AI exam?
No, despite arriving in the same retirement wave as Microsoft's Cloud and AI rebrand. The words agent, Foundry, generative AI and machine learning appear zero times in AZ-802's skills outline. It is a pure Windows Server administration exam: Active Directory, Hyper-V, storage, networking and troubleshooting.

Most Windows Server admins pair this with cloud administration, which is the AZ-104 practice test generator, and the AZ-900 practice test generator if you are starting from the fundamentals. The security exam in the same retirement wave is SC-500, which like AZ-802 is still in beta, and it replaces the AZ-500 practice test path. For infrastructure design there is AZ-305, and on the networking side the CCNA practice test generator covers the other half of most datacenter roles.
