Exam AZ-140: Configuring and Operating Microsoft Azure Virtual Desktop is the exam for the Microsoft Certified: Azure Virtual Desktop Specialty certification, with a published passing score of 700, 100 minutes on the exam clock, and a free official practice assessment on Microsoft Learn. It is unusually top-heavy: plan and implement an Azure Virtual Desktop infrastructure alone is worth 40 to 45 percent, covering networking, storage, host pools and image management. A refreshed outline takes effect July 20, 2026, and the official change log grades every listed change Minor, so this is a tune-up, not a rewrite. There is no prerequisite exam.

What the AZ-140 exam tests from July 20, 2026

We read the official skills-measured outline on Microsoft Learn the way we do for every certification page on this site. In the roughly 1,100-word outline, session host appears 22 times, and FSLogix runs to 12 mentions across the study guide. No other Microsoft exam concentrates this much weight in one domain.

Domain What is actually in it Weight
Plan and implement an Azure Virtual Desktop infrastructureNearly half the exam. Networking for session hosts including RDP Shortpath, RDP Multipath and QoS policies, Azure Private Link for AVD, storage for FSLogix components across Azure Files and Azure NetApp Files, host pool architecture and licensing decisions, automating host pool builds with PowerShell, Azure CLI, ARM templates and Bicep, and the full image lifecycle: manual images, Azure VM Image Builder, and Azure Compute Gallery.40 to 45%
Plan and implement user environments and appsFSLogix in depth: Profile Containers, ODFC containers, Cloud Cache and application masking. Client choice and deployment, device and multimedia redirection, Universal Print, Start VM on Connect, RDP properties on a host pool, application groups and RemoteApp publishing, Microsoft 365 Apps, OneDrive in multisession, Teams with the WebRTC Redirector Service, and App attach packaging.20 to 25%
Plan and implement identity and securityThe identity scenario decision: AD DS, Microsoft Entra ID, or Microsoft Entra Domain Services, and what each means for session hosts. Azure RBAC for AVD, Conditional Access for connections, passwordless and smart card authentication, Entra single sign-on, Defender for Cloud and Defender for Endpoint on session hosts, UDRs, NSGs and Azure Firewall, Bastion or JIT for admin access, App Control for Business, and confidential VMs with Trusted Launch.15 to 20%
Monitor and maintain an Azure Virtual Desktop infrastructureLog collection and analysis, Azure Monitor and customized workbooks for AVD Insights, autoscaling in host pools, managing active sessions, update strategy for session hosts, disaster recovery with multi-region plans, and backup and restore for FSLogix profiles, personal desktops and images.10 to 15%

If your study material spends equal time on all four domains, it is fighting the blueprint. Build questions that match the weights instead: generate practice questions from your own AVD notes and let the infrastructure domain dominate the set the way it dominates the exam.

The July 20, 2026 refresh: a tune-up, not a rewrite

Microsoft revised the AZ-140 outline effective July 20, 2026, and the change log is calm: the audience profile plus objective groups for identity integration, security, FSLogix, user experience and apps are each graded Minor, and nothing is graded Major. The four domains and their weights are untouched. That makes AZ-140 the opposite of its neighbor on the calendar: MD-102 gets an entirely new automation domain on July 24, 2026, four days after this refresh lands.

The transport stack is named

The networking objectives call out RDP Shortpath, RDP Multipath and QoS policies together, plus Azure Private Link for AVD. Expect scenario questions about getting session traffic off the public internet and keeping latency predictable.

FSLogix is a domain within a domain

Twelve mentions across the study guide: Profile Containers, ODFC containers, Cloud Cache, application masking, storage sizing for containers, and backup and restore for profiles. If FSLogix is fuzzy, the user environments domain and part of two others go with it.

Identity is a three-way decision

AD DS, Microsoft Entra ID, or Microsoft Entra Domain Services. The outline asks you to select the identity scenario and then configure session hosts for it, which is where hybrid muscle memory gives wrong answers in cloud-only scenarios.

Because the refresh is minor, study material written for the 2025 outline is still mostly usable. The safer move is still to generate questions from the current study guide, then confirm readiness on the free official practice assessment before booking.

Why VDI experience alone does not pass AZ-140

Plenty of candidates arrive from Citrix, VMware Horizon or on-premises RDS. The concepts transfer; the Azure specifics do not.

What you know from VDI or RDS work What the exam also expects
You size hosts from experience and vendor calculatorsHost pool architecture decisions, Azure VM capacity planning, licensing eligibility for Windows client access, and RDS CALs for Windows Server session hosts
You manage roaming profiles or Citrix Profile ManagementFSLogix Profile Containers vs ODFC containers, Cloud Cache for resilience, application masking, and Azure NetApp Files vs Azure Files for container storage
You build golden images by handAzure VM Image Builder pipelines, Azure Compute Gallery distribution, and a planned lifecycle for OS and application updates to images
Your users authenticate against on-prem ADChoosing between AD DS, Entra ID and Entra Domain Services per scenario, Conditional Access for AVD connections, and Entra single sign-on to session hosts
You scale by adding hosts when users complainAutoscaling plans for host pools, Start VM on Connect, AVD Insights workbooks, and a disaster recovery plan that covers FSLogix profiles and personal desktops

Every right-hand cell is a named objective on the July 2026 outline. Generated question drills are the cheapest way to find out which of those you can only half-explain, before the proctored clock is running.

How to build AZ-140 practice questions that match the real blueprint

Study to the weights: infrastructure first and always, then user environments and FSLogix, then identity and security, then monitoring.

1
Upload current material
The AZ-140 study guide, Microsoft Learn modules, or your own notes. If it never mentions RDP Multipath, App attach or Azure Compute Gallery, check it against the July 2026 outline before trusting it.
2
Overweight infrastructure
Nearly half your questions should come from networking, storage, host pools and images, because nearly half the exam does. Drill Shortpath vs Multipath, NetApp Files vs Azure Files, and image pipelines until the decisions are quick.
3
Make FSLogix boring
Generate scenario questions on Profile Containers, ODFC, Cloud Cache and application masking until nothing about a profile question surprises you. FSLogix shows up in three of the four domains.
4
Finish with the official mock
AZ-140 has a free official practice assessment on Microsoft Learn. Use generated questions to close gaps domain by domain, then confirm readiness on the official mock before booking.

AZ-140 exam questions, answered

What is the AZ-140 exam?
Exam AZ-140: Configuring and Operating Microsoft Azure Virtual Desktop is the exam for the Microsoft Certified: Azure Virtual Desktop Specialty certification. It tests planning, delivering, managing and monitoring virtual desktop experiences and remote apps on Azure for any device. A score of 700 or greater is required to pass, and the study guide is published on Microsoft Learn.
Is the AZ-140 exam changing in 2026?
A refreshed skills outline takes effect July 20, 2026, but it is a light revision: the official change log grades every listed change Minor, covering the audience profile, identity integration, security, FSLogix, user experience and app objectives, and nothing is graded Major. The four domains and their weights are unchanged, so current study material stays largely valid.
What is on the AZ-140 exam?
Four domains: plan and implement an Azure Virtual Desktop infrastructure (40 to 45 percent), plan and implement user environments and apps (20 to 25 percent), plan and implement identity and security (15 to 20 percent), and monitor and maintain an Azure Virtual Desktop infrastructure (10 to 15 percent). The outline names RDP Shortpath, RDP Multipath, FSLogix Cloud Cache, App attach, Azure NetApp Files, Azure VM Image Builder and Start VM on Connect verbatim.
How hard is the AZ-140 exam?
It is an intermediate-level specialty exam, and the difficulty concentrates where the weight is. The infrastructure domain alone spans network capacity planning, storage for user data, host pool architecture, licensing and image lifecycle management. Candidates from Citrix or VMware backgrounds usually find the concepts familiar and the Azure-specific services, FSLogix options and identity scenarios unfamiliar.
Does AZ-140 require AZ-104?
No exam is a prerequisite for AZ-140. The audience profile expects experience with Azure compute, networking, identity, storage and resiliency, which is the AZ-104 practice test skill set in different packaging, so many candidates earn Azure Administrator Associate first. If you already run Azure day to day, going straight to AZ-140 is reasonable.
How many questions are on the AZ-140 exam?
Microsoft does not publish an official question count for AZ-140. It does publish a passing score of 700, the exam page allots 100 minutes for the assessment, and a free official practice assessment is available on Microsoft Learn. Treat any site quoting an exact question count as unofficial, and confirm details on the exam page when you schedule.
Is the AZ-140 certification worth it?
For anyone running Azure Virtual Desktop or Windows 365 estates it is the only dedicated Microsoft credential for the job, and the skills it validates, FSLogix at scale, autoscaling host pools, image pipelines, are exactly the ones that control both user experience and the monthly Azure bill. The certification renews free every 12 months with an online renewal assessment.
