The short answer: the PTCB passing score is a scaled score of 1,400 on a scale that runs from 1,000 to 1,600. That is not a percentage, it is not a raw count of correct answers, and PTCB does not publish a conversion between the two. So when a study site tells you confidently that you need 66 of the 80 scored questions, or 75 percent, or any other specific figure, that number is somebody's estimate. It is not PTCB's standard.
This trips up a lot of candidates, because almost every other test they have taken reported a percentage. Below is what the scale actually measures, why the "how many can I miss" question has no honest answer, and what the rules around retakes really say, which is not what most prep sites are still publishing.
The Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam has 90 multiple choice questions. Ten of those are unscored pretest items that PTCB places randomly through the exam without identifying them, so your result comes from 80 scored questions. Those 80 questions produce a scaled score somewhere between 1,000 and 1,600, and 1,400 or above passes.
Scaling exists to solve a specific problem. PTCB does not administer one fixed exam to everyone; it administers different forms built from a large item pool, and no two forms are exactly equal in difficulty. If scoring were a raw percentage, a candidate who happened to draw a slightly harder form would be penalized for luck. Scaling adjusts for that, so a 1,400 earned on a harder form represents the same level of knowledge as a 1,400 earned on an easier one.
The consequence is the part people miss: because the forms differ, the number of correct answers needed to reach 1,400 is not a constant. It moves a little from form to form. That is the whole point of the design.
It is one of the most searched things about this exam, and the honest response is that the question is malformed. A percentage requires a fixed denominator and a fixed cut point. The PTCE has neither in the sense the question assumes.
You can do the naive arithmetic. On a 1,000 to 1,600 range, 1,400 sits 400 points into a 600 point spread, which is about 67 percent of the way up the scale. People then repeat that as "you need 67 percent to pass." It does not follow. Scaled score scales are not linear maps of raw percentage correct, and the bottom of the range is 1,000 rather than zero, which alone should tell you the scale is not measuring percent correct.
Some sources also confuse the passing score with the pass rate, which is a different statistic entirely: one is the standard you have to clear, the other is the share of candidates who clear it.
Nobody outside PTCB can tell you, and PTCB has not published it. What is known and worth planning around:
The practical version of this is simple. Budgeting for a specific number of misses is not a strategy you can execute anyway, because you cannot tell during the exam which items you got wrong. What you can control is how many questions you can answer quickly and correctly, and that is a preparation problem rather than an arithmetic one.
Official score reports are generally available in your PTCB account approximately one to three weeks after your exam. PTCB will email your results to the address on file if you ask, but it will not release scores by phone or fax.
If you did not pass, the report is the most useful document you will get, because it indicates which of the four knowledge domains let you down. That matters more than the overall number, since it tells you exactly where the next round of study should go. And if you failed, you have to wait for that official report before you can reapply, so there is no way to book a retake the same week.
This is worth reading carefully, because a widely repeated claim that you must wait 60 days after a failed first attempt does not appear anywhere in PTCB's current candidate guidebook. What the guidebook actually says is:
PTCB attaches a blunt warning to that policy, and it is the most honest sentence in the whole guidebook: the exams are highly reliable, which means candidates who fail should expect to fail again unless they increase their knowledge of the exam content. Rebooking quickly without changing anything about how you studied is the expensive mistake here. Many pharmacies reimburse the exam fee, and if yours does, keep the receipt, since reimbursed certification costs run through the same expense approval workflow as any other work expense, and a second 129 dollar line item tends to attract questions.
One thing that genuinely changed, and that a lot of study material has not caught up with, is the content outline. A new PTCE content outline took effect on January 6, 2026, replacing the one in force since 2020. The four knowledge domains are the same, but the weights moved:

Applied to the 80 scored questions, the current weights give exactly 28, 19, 18 and 15 questions. Federal Requirements grew by half in relative terms, largely because a knowledge area on the Drug Supply Chain Security Act was added, while content on nonsterile compounding and on narrow therapeutic index medications was removed.
None of that changes the 1,400 you need. It changes where the questions come from. If you are studying from a book bought in 2024, you are over-weighting drug names and under-weighting federal law by a meaningful margin, and that is the kind of gap that costs you a scaled score rather than a specific question.
Given that you cannot game a scaled score, the useful levers are ordinary ones.
Drill retrieval, not recognition. Rereading a chapter produces the feeling of knowing it. Answering questions about it produces the ability to retrieve it under a clock, which is what the exam measures. Shifting the balance of your study time toward questions is the single change that moves scores most.
Practice against the clock. You get 1 hour and 50 minutes of exam time for 90 questions, roughly 82 seconds each. That is comfortable for recalling a brand name and tight for a dilution calculation. If you have never worked calculations at that pace, exam day is the wrong place to find out.
Work by domain, and use your own material. Generic question banks are written against somebody's memory of the exam. If you build a PTCB practice test from your own program handouts, your top 200 drug list and your calculations worksheets, you drill what your course actually taught and you can patch an outdated review book by generating questions from current federal requirements pages. Working one knowledge domain at a time also makes it obvious which one is thin.
Sit at least one full length timed mock. Domain drilling and a 90 question simulation do different jobs, and stamina is real.
PTCE scaled scores run from 1,000 to 1,600, and the passing score is 1,400. The range is fixed regardless of which exam form you receive, which is precisely what scaling is for. A score below 1,000 or above 1,600 is not possible.
It is a passing score, and for the purpose of earning the CPhT credential that is the only distinction that matters. PTCB certification is not reported to employers as a grade or a percentile, so there is no professional advantage to a 1,550 over a 1,400. Passing is binary.
Pass rate and passing score are different things, and the pass rate is not a number you should plan around in any case, because it reflects the mix of candidates sitting the exam rather than the difficulty of the standard. Your own preparation is the only input you control.
No. Only the 80 scored questions contribute to your scaled score. The 10 pretest items are being trialed for use on future exam forms. Because they are unmarked and randomly placed, you should answer every question as though it counts, which in practice means you can ignore that they exist.
No. PTCB does not release individual item responses. Your score report indicates performance by knowledge domain, which is enough to direct your studying but not enough to review specific questions. That is standard practice for certification exams, since the items stay in the pool for reuse.
1,400 out of 1,600 is the number, and it is the only scoring figure PTCB actually publishes. Everything else circulating about percentages and question counts is inference dressed up as fact. Prepare so that the question does not matter: work the four domains in proportion to the current outline, drill retrieval against a clock, and go in able to answer the calculations without stalling.
