Scan a textbook chapter at 300 DPI in grayscale, with the page flat and square in the frame, and the text will be readable by both you and any software you point at it. Those three settings do almost all the work. Resolution below 200 DPI loses the fine detail in small print, pure black and white mode destroys faint or gray text outright, and a curved or tilted page distorts the lines near the edges.

Most people scanning a chapter get one of the three wrong, usually the color mode, and then blame the resulting mess on their scanner. The color mode row is the one to internalize. Scanner software often defaults to black and white for text documents because it produces small files, and on crisp modern print it looks fine. It works by picking a brightness threshold and forcing every pixel to pure black or pure white. Anything lighter than the threshold, meaning gray highlighter shading, faint print in an old paperback, pencil annotations, the light gray in a figure, becomes white paper and is gone. Grayscale keeps the gradations and costs you a slightly larger file. Take the larger file.

Going above 300 DPI is mostly wasted for text. 600 DPI quadruples file size and helps meaningfully only with very small print or fine line art. If a chapter has dense footnotes in six point type, it is worth it for those pages. Otherwise 300 is the sweet spot.

Scanning a bound book without wrecking the gutter

Bound textbooks are harder than loose pages because the spine will not lie flat, and the inner margin curves away from the glass or lens. That curve produces the classic dark band down the middle plus stretched, blurred text right where the line begins.

On a flatbed, scan one page at a time rather than the whole spread. Position the page you want fully on the glass and let the rest of the book hang off the edge, which lets that page sit almost flat. Press gently along the inner margin with your palm while the scan runs. Do not force a tight new binding open at 180 degrees; you will crack it and still have a curve.

With a phone, the equivalent moves are to press the page flat with your free hand outside the text area, hold the phone parallel to the page rather than at an angle, and shoot from directly above the center. Use your phone's document scanner mode if it has one. It detects the page edges, corrects the perspective so a slightly tilted shot still comes out rectangular, crops the background, and boosts contrast. That single feature handles most of what goes wrong with phone captures.

Light matters as much as position. The most common phone scanning mistake is standing between the window and the book, which lays your own shadow across the page. Overhead room light directly above creates a similar problem as glare on glossy paper. Diffuse side light, or a desk lamp positioned off to one side, gives you an evenly lit page with no hot spots.

Check the scan before you close the book

Thirty seconds of checking saves rescanning the whole chapter later. Zoom to 100 percent on the smallest text on the page, typically a footnote or a figure caption. If you can read it comfortably, so can everything else. If the letters are mushy or the strokes have broken apart, raise the resolution and redo it while the book is still open.

Then check the inner margin specifically, since that is where curvature damage shows first, and check that nothing is cut off at the edges. A scan missing the last two words of every line is worse than no scan, because you will not notice until you are studying from it a week later.

If you ran OCR as part of scanning, do one more check: copy a paragraph and paste it into a text editor. What appears is what the file actually holds, as opposed to what the page picture shows. Garbled output there means the OCR pass struggled, and it is better to know now. On a longer document, running it through a PDF word counter gives you the same signal at scale, since a forty page chapter that reports a few hundred words has a text layer covering only part of it.

What to do with the chapter once it is scanned

A scanned chapter sitting in a folder does nothing. The reason to capture it well is that a clean scan opens up everything you would do with a digital text.

You can annotate it on a tablet, which for many people beats a paper printout because the notes stay searchable and travel with the file. You can pull quotations for a paper, though on a scan without OCR that still means retyping. And you can test yourself on it, which is the use that most affects how you should study.

Rereading a chapter feels productive and mostly is not. The material gets more familiar each pass, and that familiarity is easy to mistake for knowing it. Retrieval practice, where you try to produce the answer before checking, consistently outperforms rereading for long term retention. The obstacle has always been that writing questions about a chapter you are still learning is hard and slow.
