Allow 60 to 75 seconds per standard multiple choice question, 30 to 45 seconds for a definition or vocabulary item, and 90 to 120 seconds for anything requiring a calculation. A 20 question multiple choice quiz therefore runs about 20 to 25 minutes. Set the clock by question type rather than by a round number, and when in doubt time yourself on the actual questions and give students at least half again as long.
Timing is the quiz setting people think about least and get wrong most. Too generous and the clock does nothing except add stress at the end. Too tight and you have built a reading speed test wearing the costume of a knowledge test, which is unfair to exactly the students who understand the material but process carefully.
Different question formats demand different amounts of work before the answer arrives. Recognition is fast. Retrieval is slower. Calculation is slower still. These are workable defaults.

These line up roughly with how major US exams pace themselves. The digital SAT gives students a bit over a minute per reading and writing question. The ACT is famously tighter, closer to 36 seconds per English question, which is precisely why students find it a speed test. Most classroom quizzes should be more generous than a standardized exam, not less, because the goal is measuring knowledge rather than sorting a national cohort.
Teachers time their own quiz, see that it took eight minutes, and allot fifteen. Then a third of the class does not finish.
You wrote the questions. You know which option is right before you finish reading the stem, you never reread anything, and you never second-guess. A reasonable rule is to take your own time and multiply by three for students seeing the material for the first time in that format. Better still, have a colleague who did not write the quiz take it, and use their time plus a margin.
The other quiet failure is the long stem. A question with a paragraph of setup costs everyone reading time before any thinking starts, and it disproportionately penalizes slower readers and multilingual students who know the content perfectly well. If several of your questions need 90 seconds purely because of length, the fix is usually to shorten the stems rather than extend the clock.
A timer is a tool, not a default. It earns its place in three situations.
Rehearsing for a timed exam. If students will face a clock in May, they should meet one in March. Practicing untimed all year and then sitting a timed exam is a genuinely unpleasant surprise, and the pacing skill is separate from the content knowledge.
Checking fluent recall. Some knowledge is only useful when it is fast: multiplication facts, drug names, common law tests, vocabulary. A clock is the only way to distinguish knowing something from being able to work it out.
Discouraging the open-document approach. On a take-home quiz, a tight clock makes hunting through the source material impractical, so students answer from memory. This is imperfect as an integrity measure but it does change behavior.
Outside those three, leave it untimed. If the goal is learning the material, the clock adds pressure without adding information, and the research on retrieval practice suggests the benefit comes from the act of recall itself rather than from doing it quickly.
Students with documented accommodations for extended time need the untimed or extended version from the start, not a scramble on quiz day. The simplest approach is to build one quiz and share two versions: the timed one for the class and an untimed link for students with accommodations. When you create a timed quiz from your material, generating both versions from the same upload takes no extra work, since the questions are identical and only the timing setting changes.
Practice tests are the one case where you should copy the real exam exactly rather than use comfortable defaults. If the section gives 35 minutes for 40 questions, give 35 minutes for 40 questions, even though that feels harsh. The point of a practice test is rehearsal, and rehearsing at a gentler pace teaches a pace that will not survive the real thing. Build the questions from the review material first with a PDF to practice test workflow, then apply the exam's real timing rather than a round number.
For ongoing practice, a larger question bank is more useful than one timed test, because you can pull a fresh set each week and keep the timing constant while the questions change. That way you are measuring improvement rather than memory of last week's items.
The same arithmetic applies to workplace testing, where the stakes are different but the fairness question is identical. Timed screening tests in hiring get criticized fairly often, usually because the clock is measuring something the job does not require. If a role involves careful analysis rather than speed, a tight timer selects for the wrong trait. Teams that run structured, consistent first-round screening interviews tend to get better signal than a timed knowledge quiz does, because a conversation reveals reasoning while a clock mostly reveals nerves.
About 20 to 25 minutes at roughly one minute per question, plus a couple of minutes for instructions and settling. Shorter formats like true or false cut that to about 10 minutes, while applied problems can push past 35. Time a colleague on the actual questions and add a margin rather than estimating.
It is enough for true or false items and short definition recall, and too tight for anything with four full-sentence options. At 30 seconds a student can read a standard multiple choice question and its options roughly once, with no time to reconsider. Use it deliberately when you want fluent recall, not as a general default.
Time them when you are rehearsing for a timed exam, checking fluent recall, or discouraging students from searching the source material during a take-home. Leave them untimed when the goal is learning, when questions reward careful thinking, or when students have accommodations. Running the same quiz untimed first and timed later works well.
Commonly time and a half or double time, depending on what the student's plan specifies. Follow the documented accommodation rather than a rule of thumb, and prepare the extended version in advance so nobody has to negotiate it in front of the class on quiz day.
It can, particularly for students who already experience test anxiety, and the effect is largest when the clock is genuinely tight. Low-stakes timed practice reduces that over time because students meet the pressure when it does not count. Keep the grade weight small, allow retakes, and be generous on the first timed attempt of a term.
