The CCNP ENCOR 350-401 exam is genuinely hard: it covers six domains across enterprise routing, switching, wireless, security, and automation in 120 minutes, and Cisco does not publish a passing score. Most candidates with real hands-on experience need two to four months of focused study. The difficulty comes from breadth plus depth, not trick questions.
ENCOR has a reputation, and it is mostly earned. As the core exam for CCNP Enterprise and the qualifying exam for CCIE Enterprise, it is designed to filter for professional-level competence. But "hard" is not the same as "unpredictable." If you understand where the difficulty actually lives, you can prepare for it directly. Here is an honest breakdown.
Three things stack up. First, breadth: the blueprint spans architecture, virtualization, infrastructure, network assurance, security, and automation, so you cannot specialize your way through it. Second, depth: Infrastructure alone is 30 percent of the exam and expects real fluency in OSPF, BGP, EtherChannel, spanning tree, wireless, and IP services, not surface familiarity. Third, format: alongside multiple choice, you get drag-and-drop and simulation items that reward people who have actually configured and troubleshot Cisco gear rather than only read about it.
There is also the scoring. Cisco does not publish a fixed passing score for 350-401. Scaled scores run from 300 to 1,000, the cut score varies between exam forms, and you only see your required score when the exam begins. The often-quoted 825 is unofficial. That uncertainty makes the exam feel harder than a test with a clear, published bar.
For most candidates, Infrastructure is both the largest and the toughest, because it packs the most sub-topics and the deepest configuration knowledge. BGP path selection and OSPF behavior in particular catch people out. Security is the next pressure point, now covering zero-trust and modern access concepts. The Automation and Artificial Intelligence domain, renamed in the v1.2 blueprint, is smaller at 15 percent but trips up traditional network engineers who have never touched Python, JSON, or REST APIs. Ironically, that domain is where disciplined study pays off fastest, because it is the most learnable from scratch.
A hidden source of difficulty is outdated material. Version 1.1 retired on March 18, 2026, and v1.2 became the active blueprint the next day. Much of the free content online still reflects v1.1. Two tells separate current material from stale: the sixth domain is now called Automation and Artificial Intelligence rather than just Automation, and the exam references Cisco Catalyst Center, the new name for Cisco DNA Center. Studying old names and topic emphasis makes the exam harder than it needs to be, because you prepare for the wrong version.
With hands-on enterprise networking experience, two to three months of steady study is a realistic target. Coming from a CCNA-level foundation without much production exposure, plan for three to five months and budget lab time. The single most reliable predictor of passing is not hours logged but time spent configuring and troubleshooting, whether on physical gear, a home lab, or a simulator. ENCOR rewards muscle memory.
Weight your effort by the blueprint. Infrastructure and Security are half the exam between them, so they deserve half your time. ENCOR takes a subset of that ground, mainly enterprise routing, switching, wireless, and services, and pushes it to professional depth, then adds architecture, virtualization, and automation on top. Where CCNA asks whether you know what OSPF is, ENCOR asks you to predict its behavior in a multi-area design with redistribution. Expect the configuration and troubleshooting to be several steps more involved, and expect the questions to assume you already own everything CCNA covered.
It is possible but risky. The simulation and drag-and-drop items reward people who have actually built and broken configurations, and no amount of reading fully replaces that. If you cannot access physical gear, a network simulator or emulator is a genuine substitute, and free tiers are enough for most ENCOR topics. The candidates who struggle most are those who studied entirely from video and notes without ever typing a command. Even a few weeks of hands-on reps before the exam changes your odds noticeably, because the exam is testing skill, not recall. A practical routine is to read a topic, configure it in a lab immediately, deliberately break it, and then fix it while reading the diagnostic output. ENCOR is a fair but demanding exam. It is hard because it is comprehensive and expects hands-on skill, not because it is designed to trick you. Prepare with current v1.2 material, weight your study toward Infrastructure and Security, get real configuration reps, and test yourself relentlessly. Do that, and the difficulty becomes a matter of preparation rather than luck. Plenty of engineers pass it every month, and the CCNP and CCIE doors it opens make the effort worthwhile.
