The Google Cloud Professional Cloud Architect exam is 2 hours long, has 50 to 60 multiple choice and multiple select questions, and costs US$200 plus tax, delivered online-proctored or at a testing center in English or Japanese. There are no prerequisites, though Google recommends 3+ years of industry experience including 1+ year on Google Cloud, and the certification is valid for 2 years. Google does not publish a passing score; you get a pass or fail. Each exam includes 2 case studies that carry 20 to 30% of the questions, drawn from a set of four: Altostrat Media, Cymbal Retail, EHR Healthcare, and KnightMotives Automotive, several of which are built around Google Cloud generative AI solutions.

What the Professional Cloud Architect exam tests on the current guide

We read the official certification exam guide PDF, as we do for every cert page on this site. Six sections, and the shape is the opposite of the Associate exam: design and planning alone is a quarter of the exam, and the guide says familiarity with the Google Cloud Well-Architected Framework and its six pillars is a key requirement for the role.

Section What is actually in it Weight
Designing and planning a cloud solution architectureBusiness and technical requirements, cost optimization, integration patterns, workload disposition (build, buy, modify, or deprecate), KPIs and ROI, high availability and failover, network, storage, and compute choices, migration planning with Migration Center, and AI/ML solution design across Gemini models, Agent Builder, Model Garden, and AI Hypercomputer.~25%
Managing and provisioning a cloud solution infrastructureHybrid and multicloud network topologies, VPC design and load balancing, storage provisioning with lifecycle and retention, compute provisioning (spot vs. standard, GKE, serverless, VMware Engine), plus end-to-end ML workflows on Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, Agent Platform Pipelines, and Gemini Enterprise features like AI Agents and NotebookLM.~17.5%
Designing for security and complianceIAM and resource hierarchy, Cloud KMS and customer-managed keys, VPC Service Controls, Identity-Aware Proxy, Workload Identity Federation, Chrome Enterprise Premium, software supply chain security, securing AI with Model Armor and Sensitive Data Protection, and compliance from health record privacy to PII handling and SOC 2.~17.5%
Analyzing and optimizing technical and business processesSDLC and CI/CD, troubleshooting and root cause analysis, disaster recovery, plus the business half: stakeholder management, change management, team skills readiness, CapEx/OpEx cost optimization, and business continuity.~15%
Managing implementationAdvising dev and ops teams, API management with Apigee, testing frameworks, migration tooling, Gemini Cloud Assist, and programmatic work in Cloud Shell, the gcloud SDK, emulators, and Terraform.~12.5%
Ensuring solution and operations excellenceThe operational excellence pillar of the Well-Architected Framework, observability (monitoring, logging, profiling, alerting), deployment and release management, quality control, and production reliability practices like chaos engineering, penetration testing, and load testing.~12.5%

Every section rewards judgment over recall. Drill that judgment: generate practice questions from your own Google Cloud notes and make each one state a business constraint that forces a design trade-off.

The case studies changed. Most PCA courses still drill the old ones.

Case study questions are 20 to 30% of your exam, tied to 2 of the four fictitious businesses in the current guide. The guide also notes that several of these businesses are using Google Cloud's generative AI solutions, so expect AI workloads inside the scenarios, not just infrastructure.

In the current exam guide

Altostrat Media, Cymbal Retail, EHR Healthcare, and KnightMotives Automotive. Read all four before exam day: knowing each company's constraints in advance means case questions become a lookup, not a comprehension test under the clock.

The staleness test for your course

If your prep material drills Mountkirk Games, TerramEarth, or Helicopter Racing League, it was written for an earlier version of this exam; those case studies are not in the current guide. EHR Healthcare is the only carryover, so treat everything else in an older course's case-study chapter as background reading.

The fix is cheap: download the current case studies from the exam guide page, upload them here, and generate scenario questions against the businesses you will actually see.

Full exam versus renewal exam

The certification lasts 2 years, one year less than the Associate Cloud Engineer, and Google runs a shorter renewal exam. You become eligible 60 days before expiration; let it lapse and you sit the full exam again. The renewal exam is a signal of where Google thinks the role is going: its single case study is aligned to generative AI solutions and carries 90 to 100% of the questions.

How to build PCA practice questions that match the real exam

Architect questions hinge on constraints. Make your practice questions state them.

1
Upload current material
The official exam guide, the four current case studies, your course notes, or Well-Architected Framework pages. If your course never mentions Gemini Enterprise or Model Armor, add the current guide alongside it.
2
Generate trade-off questions
The exam's signature move is two designs that both work until a constraint kills one: lowest cost versus lowest latency, managed versus portable, single region versus multi-region. Ask for questions that state the constraint.
3
Drill the case studies
Upload each case study and generate questions against its stated requirements. 20 to 30% of the real exam works exactly this way, and rehearsing it removes the biggest time sink on the clock.
4
Rehearse the clock
2 hours for up to 60 questions leaves two minutes each, and case-study items read long. Finish prep with full-length timed sets so the reading pace is automatic before exam day.

Google Cloud architect exam questions, answered

How many questions are on the Google Cloud Professional Cloud Architect exam?
50 to 60 questions, multiple choice and multiple select, in a 2 hour window. Each exam includes 2 case studies whose questions make up 20 to 30% of the total. Registration is US$200 plus applicable taxes, online-proctored or at a testing center, in English or Japanese.
What is the passing score for the Google Cloud Professional Cloud Architect exam?
Google does not publish one. You receive a pass or fail result with no numeric score. Any prep material quoting "70%" or "80%" is inventing the number. The dependable strategy is coverage weighted the way the guide weights it: a quarter of your effort on design and planning, and real time inside the four case studies.
How hard is the Google Cloud Professional Cloud Architect exam?
It is widely treated as one of the hardest mainstream cloud certifications, and the difficulty is structural: questions are business scenarios where several answers technically work and a stated constraint (cost, compliance, availability, migration timeline) decides which one is right. Google recommends 3+ years of industry experience with at least 1 year designing on Google Cloud, and that design experience matters more than memorizing service limits.
What case studies are on the Professional Cloud Architect exam?
The current guide lists four: Altostrat Media, Cymbal Retail, EHR Healthcare, and KnightMotives Automotive, several of them built around Google Cloud generative AI solutions. Your exam will include 2 of the four. Older prep that drills Mountkirk Games, TerramEarth, or Helicopter Racing League predates the current guide; only EHR Healthcare carried over.
Does the Google Cloud Professional Cloud Architect certification expire?
Yes, after 2 years. From 60 days before expiration you can take the renewal exam: 25 questions, 1 hour, US$100, in English or Japanese, built almost entirely around a single generative AI case study. Renewing extends the certification another 2 years; letting it lapse means retaking the full exam.
What is the difference between Associate Cloud Engineer and Professional Cloud Architect?
Scope and altitude. The ACE tests operating workloads someone else designed: deploy, monitor, secure, fix. The PCA tests designing them: requirements, trade-offs, migration plans, and business processes, with case studies to match. ACE is US$125 and valid 3 years; PCA is US$200 and valid 2 years. Most people working on Google Cloud take ACE first, but there is no prerequisite forcing that order.
Is the Google Cloud Professional Cloud Architect certification worth it?
For anyone designing or hoping to design systems on Google Cloud, yes: it is the flagship Google Cloud credential US employers name in architect and senior engineer postings. Budget honestly for the lifecycle, though. US$200 buys 2 years, then US$100 renewals, so it rewards people actively in Google Cloud roles more than collectors adding a fifth cloud badge.
