The Cloud Digital Leader exam costs US$99, runs 90 minutes with 50 to 60 multiple choice questions, has no prerequisites, and is valid for 3 years. Google does not publish a passing score for it: results are pass or fail only, so any site quoting a percentage is guessing. It is Google Cloud's foundational, non-engineering certification, and the current version is available only through August 11, 2026, after which a new version replaces it. Six sections, currently near-even at roughly 16% to 17% each. In the new version five sections tie at roughly 18% and Scaling with Google Cloud Operations drops to about 10%.

Last updated July 2026

Read this first: the exam changes on August 11, 2026

The official exam guide carries a banner that most prep material has not caught up with yet. In Google's words, this version of the exam is available through August 11, after which it will be replaced by the new version. The guide also splits candidates by training date: if you took the on-demand training before June 8, the current guide applies to you. If you took it on or after June 8, Google points you at the updated guide.

A beta of the new version is running now, and beta attempts do not count against your attempt limits. If you are reading this close to publication, note that beta registration closes July 19, 2026, and beta results arrive in August. Practical advice: if you are booked before August 11, study the current guide. If you are testing after, study the new one. Studying the wrong guide is the most expensive mistake available on this exam right now, and it costs nothing to check which one you need.

One honest caveat we will not paper over: the new weights below come from the beta guide, published May 19, 2026. Google can adjust them at general availability. They are the best available figures, not final ones, and we will update this page when the launched version is out.

What the Cloud Digital Leader exam tests, current version and new

We read both official exam guide PDFs, as we do for every cert page on this site. The six section names are identical across versions, so a glance at a contents page will not tell you which guide you are holding. The weights are what moved, and they moved in one clear direction: flatter at the top, with Operations cut nearly in half.

Section What is actually in it Current (to Aug 11) New (from Aug 11)
Digital Transformation with Google CloudWhy cloud technology transforms business, and the core vocabulary. The new guide adds agentic AI to that foundational vocabulary list alongside cloud and digital transformation, and adds AI Hypercomputer to the differentiators.~17%~18%
Exploring Data Transformation with Google CloudData value, database options, and analytics. Product refresh in the new guide: Managed Service for Apache Spark appears for pipelines, and AlloyDB Omni and BigQuery Omni show up on the multicloud side.~16%~18%
Innovating with Google Cloud Artificial IntelligenceAI and ML business value. The most rewritten section: a new objective on agentic AI reshaping industries, a dedicated AI Hypercomputer objective covering GPUs, TPUs and flexible consumption, and the Agent Platform ecosystem naming. TensorFlow and Cloud TPU objectives from the current guide are gone.~16%~18%
Modernize Infrastructure and Applications with Google CloudModernization paths, compute options, APIs, and hybrid setups. GKE Enterprise features on the multicloud side in the new guide.~17%~18%
Trust and Security with Google CloudThe threat landscape and Google Cloud's security approach. Now explicitly AI security: LLM attacks join the threat list, a new objective covers securing every layer of the AI stack (infrastructure, data, models, platform, agents), and Google Threat Intelligence appears with its Mandiant and VirusTotal sourcing.~17%~18%
Scaling with Google Cloud OperationsFinancial governance, cost management, reliability, and monitoring. Dynamic Workload Scheduler and Autoclass appear on the cost side. This is the section that shrinks: roughly 17% today, roughly 10% in the new version.~17%~10%

There is no single dominant section in either version, which changes how you should study. On an exam where five of six sections carry near-identical weight, a thin spot anywhere costs the same as a thin spot anywhere else, and breadth beats depth. That is exactly what question drills are good at: generate practice questions from your own Google Cloud notes across all six sections rather than over-reading the one you find most interesting.

Why drill questions for a vocabulary exam?

Because that is precisely what the Cloud Digital Leader is. Nobody asks you to configure anything. You get a described business situation and pick the Google Cloud product or concept that fits it, which means the entire exam rests on recall of a product list that Google keeps renaming. Technical candidates fail this exam more often than they expect, and the reason is consistent: they reason from how the technology works instead of recognizing the name Google currently uses for it. Reasoning does not help when two products both plausibly fit and only one is the answer the guide names.

On the current guide

Six near-even sections, Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform as the name for custom model building, and a security section written around a modern threat landscape. The new version pushes further: agentic AI as foundational vocabulary, AI Hypercomputer, Agent Studio and AutoML on Agent Platform, LLM attacks, and Google Threat Intelligence.

The staleness test for your course

Search your prep material for "Vertex AI". If it teaches Vertex AI as the current product name, it is already out of date: the live exam guide now reads "Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform (formerly Vertex AI)". Then search for "agentic AI". If that is missing too, the course predates the new version entirely. Keep it for fundamentals, but build your questions from the current guide.

This is the trap worth naming plainly, because it is the one that costs US$99. The Vertex AI rename is not a future problem waiting for August. It is in the guide that governs the exam you can sit today, and there is no free retake: Google requires payment every time you register. Generating your questions from the current guide rather than from a course recorded last year is the cheapest insurance available.

Cloud Digital Leader versus Associate Cloud Engineer and Professional Cloud Architect

Google runs three tiers, and the Cloud Digital Leader is the only one aimed at people who do not build. Picking the wrong tier is common, so here is the honest split.

Cloud Digital Leader Associate Cloud Engineer Professional Cloud Architect

Note the retake column, because it is the most under-reported difference between the tiers. As a foundational exam the Cloud Digital Leader gets Google's lenient policy: 10 attempts in a 1 year period with 14 days between failed attempts. The Associate and Professional exams allow 4 attempts across 2 years with escalating waits that reach a full year. Plenty of prep sites apply the harsher rule to the Cloud Digital Leader. If you are ready to move up, the Google Cloud Associate Cloud Engineer practice exam is the engineering tier above this one, and the Google Cloud Professional Cloud Architect practice exam is the design tier above that.

How to build Cloud Digital Leader practice questions that match the exam

The exam tests recognition of current product names. Your questions should drill exactly that.

1
Upload the right guide
Check your exam date first. Testing before August 11, 2026 means the current guide. Testing after means the new one. Upload that PDF alongside your course notes so the questions come from the version that will actually be scored.
2
Spread across all six
No section dominates, so weight your question sets evenly rather than chasing a biggest domain. In the new version, ease off Operations slightly: it falls from roughly 17% to roughly 10%, the only real reallocation.
3
Drill names, not theory
Retake each set until the product that solves a described business problem comes back instantly, in Google's current naming. Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, AI Hypercomputer, Autoclass, Dynamic Workload Scheduler, AlloyDB Omni, Google Threat Intelligence.
4
Rehearse the business framing
Questions arrive as business scenarios, not technical specs. Generate scenario-style questions so you practice mapping a stated goal, cutting cost or improving reliability, to the product Google expects, which is the actual skill being scored.

Cloud Digital Leader exam questions, answered

How much does the Cloud Digital Leader certification cost?
US$99 plus tax, which makes it the cheapest exam in the Google Cloud family, against US$125 for the Associate Cloud Engineer and US$200 for the Professional Cloud Architect. There is no free retake: Google's policy states that payment is required each time you register. Renewal three years later is a shorter exam at US$60.
What is the passing score for the Cloud Digital Leader exam?
Google does not publish one, and we are not going to invent one. Its certification FAQ says exams are designed only to determine whether an individual meets a minimum passing standard, so only pass or fail results are provided. If a prep site tells you the bar is 70%, that number came from nowhere. What you do get if you fail is section-level feedback showing where you were weak, which is enough to aim your second attempt.
How long is the Cloud Digital Leader exam?
90 minutes for 50 to 60 multiple choice questions on the current version, which is generous for the format. The new version arriving after August 11, 2026 stretches to 2 hours with roughly 75 questions, based on the beta form. Both can be taken online-proctored from home or at a test center, and the renewal exam is 20 questions in 45 minutes.
Does the Cloud Digital Leader certification expire?
Yes, after 3 years. That is the same window as the Associate Cloud Engineer and a year longer than the Professional Cloud Architect, which expires after 2. Your renewal window opens 180 days before expiration and renewal is a shorter exam: 20 questions, 45 minutes, US$60. Renewal exams do not come with a score report, so you get pass or fail and nothing else.
Do I need experience to take the Cloud Digital Leader exam?
No. There are no prerequisites, and neither exam guide uses the word prerequisite anywhere. This is the foundational tier, written for people who need to talk accurately about cloud and AI rather than build with it. In practice that means account executives, consultants, analysts, marketers, finance partners, and product and program managers who are tired of nodding along in architecture conversations.
Is the Cloud Digital Leader exam multiple choice?
Yes. Google's certification page states the format as multiple choice, and there are no labs, no case studies, and no configuration tasks. This is worth knowing because the Associate Cloud Engineer and Professional Cloud Architect exams both mix multiple select questions into the paper, and the Professional Cloud Architect adds case studies worth 20% to 30% of its questions. The Cloud Digital Leader is the simplest format Google offers.
Is the Cloud Digital Leader certification worth it?
Honestly, it depends who you are, and the answer is no for a lot of people. If you are an engineer, it will not move your resume, and the Associate Cloud Engineer is the better US$125. If you are not an engineer but cloud and AI decisions run through your work, it is the cheapest credible way to stop guessing: US$99, no prerequisites, and a syllabus that is genuinely about business value rather than YAML. US employers rarely require it, but it is common as internal enablement at partners and resellers, where it is often reimbursed.
How hard is the Cloud Digital Leader exam?
It is the easiest certification Google offers, but that is not the same as easy, and technical candidates underestimate it in a specific way. There is nothing to figure out. Either you recognize the product Google means or you do not, and the product list keeps being renamed underneath you: the guide already calls Vertex AI the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform. Engineers who study by reasoning about how things work end up losing points to people who simply memorized the current names.
